If you're an architecture buff, then Mies van der Rohe will be a familiar name. The man responsible for bringing Bauhaus ideas to Chicago (and America), founded a School of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, thus starting an entire movement of design in architecture. The IIT campus features a broad range of architectural styles and public art. The initial buildings were built in 1890; the Armour Institute and Lewis Institute merged to form IIT in 1940. It became known for leading trends in modernist architecture under the leadership of Ludwig Mies van Der Rohe, who designed its campus.
