Beside a visit to Volcanoes National Park, a must visit when coming to the big island. Mauna Kea is technically the tallest mountain in the world from base to summit. It rises 14 thousand feet above sea level and is the only place in the world where you can travel from sea level to 14 thousand feet in under two hours. The rangers and astronomy students at the summit provide a guided stargazing tour each night (weather permitting) just after sunset, and visitors are allowed to view the stars and galaxies through the big telescopes.

They have star/galaxy tours here for free with a laser light after dark–in addition to a gift shop full of unique and intriguing items. Many astrologists bring or store their large, high-power telescopes at this center and love to chat with visitors and offer to show them planets, stars, etc. through their telescopes. Mauna Kea is one of the top stargazing destinations in the world and holds the planet's most powerful telescope at its summit. The altitude gets chilly at night, so bring a sweatshirt/jacket and long pants!
