The tower of St Botolph’s in Boston, the Boston Stump, is the tallest medieval church tower in Britain, 272 feet high (83m) and a prominent landmark for sailors on the Wash. It would have been a familiar sight to the Pilgrim Fathers for it was from Boston, in 1607, that religious separatists William Brewster and William Bradford and their followers first attempted to sail away to the Netherlands to escape persecution. A lonely memorial marks the site beside Scotia Creek south of the town where they were captured, having been betrayed by their ship’s captain, and the prison cells in Boston Guildhall where they were held awaiting trial can still be seen.

St Botolph’s Church One of the UK’s largest parish churches, St Botolph’s is the first thing you’ll see as you approach the town, dominating the flat landscape for miles. The Perpendicular Gothic tower is eighty-three metres high and nicknamed the Stump. It was completed in the 1510s, when Boston was flourishing, and you’ll be able to scale the 209 steps up to an open walkway two thirds to the top of the tower for panoramas of The Fens and The Wash.

Affectionately known as the Boston stump this is the largest parish church in the UK. On Saturdays (covid allowing) you can climb the tower and the guided tours are a great way to learn about the rich history and Boston’s role in the founding of the USA and Australia
