The basilica was built to celebrate the end of the plague, which decimated the population of the area now occupied by the Veneto. It was wanted by the Serenissima as a prayer and as a thank you to the Virgin Mother of God for preserving the city of Venice from the terrible plague of the seventeenth century. The architect of the Salute was the same of Ca 'Rezzonico, Baldassare Longhena. The construction of the church was completed in 1687, 56 years after the beginning of the works.

That's a really important place for Venetian People: every year in Novemeber we celebrate the "health" festival in this place. In the '600 the legend says, when the city was devasted from the plague, the citizen asked for a miracle, swearing to build a magnificent church if the plague wouldbe stopped. The next day here, where now there is the church, all saw a old woman cleaning the street: but nobody knew her. After that, the plague was stopped. So the cityof Venice built this magnificent chirch, to celebrate the recovered health.
