Day visit to Konavle region should be fullfilled with Sokol Grad, the stone castle built to protect Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) from the East.

This fort found itself under Dubrovnik rule in 1420 and was immediately submitted to further construction – rebuilding of certain parts, strengthening of others, arming and general maintenance. This fort survived unscathed the big earthquake of 1667. It is not mentioned in the 1672 archives as a military complex and it was probably abandoned around that time. As was customary in the region, the locals used the stones of the fort to build their homes and smaller walls, so Fort Sokol was heavily deconstructed. The ruins of the fort have been placed under state protection and are maintained in their present condition. Sokol tower is the Dubrovnik Republic's defensive fortress situated at the border with forme Ottoman Empire. It is located in the village Dunave (Konavle region) on a 25 meters high inaccessible rock. It has a long history, and can be traced from prehestoric times, to late antiquity and after the Dubrovnik Republic.

A large, fortified tower, Sokol Grad lies just 30-minute drive from Dubrovnik. It was first open to visitors in 2013, after extensive restoration works. The site has an interesting history; some artefacts found there date back to Bronze time. However, in 1420 the site became a part of Dubrovnik Republic, and the tower was erected to today’s size. The restoration is excellent. You can really easily imagine what everyday life of the 15th century soldiers stationed there could look like. You can also see different weaponry including original canons.
