This planation gives a small glimpse of the life in Charleston 200 years ago. The Gullah people have restored the land to showcase not only the property owner, but the slaves that ran the crop as well. It is the closest plantation to visit and is so important to truly understanding Charleston's history.
Learn the true history of what happened in South Carolina after the Civil War at the former South Carolina headquarters of the Freedman's Bureau. If you are interested in Reconstruction Era history this is the place.
Walking guided tours of a former plantation. Lots of local and national context provided. Refreshingly from the perspective of the enslaved people, not the plantation owners.
McLeod Plantation is located at 325 Country Club Drive on James Island, South Carolina. Situated at Wappoo Creek which flows into the Ashley River, historic events have been recorded throughout the period from 1678 when it first appeared on maps under "Morris." The plantation house standing on the land today was constructed in about 1858 in the Georgian style. Also on the property are six clapboard slave cabins, a detached kitchen, a dairy building, a pre-war gin house for long-staple cotton, a barn, and a carriage house. The plantation is an important Gullah heritage site preserved in recognition of its cultural and historical significance.
