The White Tower is the point where the seaward defense and the eastern wall met. For years it served as a prison for condemned prisoners awaiting execution. In early 1980s it was reconstructed and since 1985 is operating as a museum. Today the White Tower is used as a place of exhibition of the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki. For the first months of 2002 it housed ‘Byzantine Hours’, an exhibition devoted to ordinary life in Byzantine times.

The White Tower of Thessaloniki (Greek: Λευκός Πύργος Lefkós Pýrgos; Turkish: Beyaz Kule; Ladino: Kuli Blanka) is a monument and museum on the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki, capital of the region of Macedonia in northern Greece. The present tower replaced an old Byzantine fortification, known to have been mentioned around the 12th century, that the Ottoman Empire reconstructed to fortify the city's harbour sometime after Sultan Murad II captured Thessaloniki in 1430. The tower became a notorious prison and scene of mass executions during the period of Ottoman rule.

The white tower of Thessaloniki is more than a historical monument. It’s a meeting point with your fellow travelers or friends and a great target to go out and walk or ride your bicycle and explore the beach frond pedestrian, the views of the thermaicos gulf and it’s amazing sunsets. Along the way towards the monument you can also see the old part of Thessaloniki ano poli in the background hills. The monument operates as a museum in a scheduled interactive historical story board. Have a nice walk ;)
