The Sea War Museum Jutland in Thyborøn is Denmark's only real international museum that tells international history. The museum focuses on the First World War in the North Sea, with emphasis on the Jutland battle off the west coast of Jutland in 1916. It was the largest naval battle in world history at that time, and it has never since passed. Just over 100 kilometers west of Thyborøn, 100,000 men and 250 German and British ships fought for dominion at sea, and the order of the gun was so fierce that it could be heard ashore. The battle lasted 12 hours, and when it was over, 25 ships lay at the bottom of the sea. 8,645 German and British sailors lost their lives. As the war on land stopped and the fronts dug down, events in the North Sea were crucial to the outcome of the First World War. Only in Thyborøn can you see the whole story. The Sea War Museum Jutland was created by the diver and businessman Gert Normann Andersen, who, through a long life, searched the battlefields of the North Sea and retrieved objects from the sea floor before being destroyed by heavy fishing gear or the natural degradation. For the same reason, the museum has many unique objects that cannot be seen anywhere else, including an entire submarine tower of brass from the British submarine E 50. Sea War Museum Jutland tells world history and war history, but does so without glorifying the war.
