The Klis Fortress is a medieval fortress above a village bearing the same name, situated 12 km away from Split. You can reach it by bus, car, taxi or bike. The fortress was built by the ancient Illyrian tribe "Dalmatae", becoming a royal castle that was the seat of many Croatian kings, and a stronghold built perched high on a hilltop (altitude of 360 m) for the purpose of being able to control invasions of other nations (from the Illyrians and the Venetians to the Ottomans) who considered it the gateway to Dalmatia, old Salona and Split, becoming the major source of defense in Dalmatia during the Ottoman wars in Europe. It also became extremely popular recently as it is the filming location of the famous fictional city-state from famous TV show "Game of Thrones" introduced in season 4 (in 2014) when Daenerys Targaryen and her army marched towards Meereen (the largest of the 3 great Slaver Cities) to free the slaves (the streets of Meereen were shot both on Klis Fortress and in Diocletian’s Palace in Split). Inside there is therefore an exhibition dedicated to this show. If you plan to visit Split at the end of July make sure you visit Klis, because there is an event called "Uskok Battle for Klis", organized by Historical Unit "Kliški uskoci", that is a two-day spectacle of historical re-enactment, involving over 300 members of historical units and knights from all over Croatia and Europe. Finally I recommend having a meal at restaurant Perilica in Klis before of after visiting the fortress, to enjoy a delicious traditional Dalmatian meal of slow (real wood) fire roasted lamb.

Fort the lovers of ancient fortresses and for the lovers of Game of thrones. Some scenes of GOT were filmed here. Also, great view to Split, specially at the night hours.
