One of the nicest places to spend time wandering around lush bush, glorious fully mature trees, native ferns, tiny streams, native bird life. On the way from Takaka to Collingwood you can turn into the carpark off the main road and within moments forget that there even is a road nearby! In the letter box at the start of the track are maps of the park (which you are encouraged to take) showing all the trails and their names, so you'll know where you are by the many hand carved signposts. This suits all ages and fitness levels, and the shade is a wonderful break on a hot sunny day. Only a few minutes drive away is the world famous Mussel Inn where you can stop in for a cold beer, wine, cider, tea, coffee, juice, snack, lunch, dinner......

My favourite place to walk in a peaceful and interesting environment. If you want to escape the heat of summer or you're looking for a pleasant bush walk as an alternative to sand, the tracks that crisscross Milnthorpe make a pleasant place to be. With numerous entry points along the beach, SH60 and from Nelson Street, you can take your pick for where start your walk. For the most part the tracks are flat but because of tree roots and natural obstructions like the odd fallen tree etc, they’re not great for buggies You can come out at the river mouth but be careful of the changing tides and strong currents. You could also come out on Milnthorpe Beach, look for shells, crabs and pipi or build forts out of driftwood. While you walk, keep an eye out for sculptures hidden amongst the trees.

Milnethorpe Park is suitable for all ages. Full of pleasant bush walks and crisscrossing tracks, it's a great escape from the heat of summer. Between the native bush and the birdlife, there is a lot to look at and listen to. There are several entry points along the beach, SH60 and from Nelson Street. The tracks are relatively flat aside from natural obstructions and tree roots, so young walkers can enjoy the shorter walks. I generally wouldn't recommend taking a buggy, but a carrier would work if you want the option of giving littler legs a break. There are hidden sculptures along the way, a range of bird and marine life to look at, and plenty of places to build a fort or let your imagination run wild! When you've had your fun in the bush, take a stroll along the gorgeous sand beach or hang out and build a sand castle. Bring snacks and drinks with you, as the closest shop is a jaunt up the road in Collingwood. There is a park toilet available at the bottom of Kendal Street near the access point to the inlet and river mouth. Milnethorpe Park is free to explore, but donations are appreciated and can be made at the donation boxes located near the car parks.

An arboretum 5 minutes drive from Collingwood. Take any number of tracks through the trees and come to the beach. From there - you can walk all the way back to Collingwood along the beach or swim in the Quay for some of the best swimming in the bay at low tide.

Lots of different trails. Lovely regenerating bush by the sea near Parapara.
