a rocky wall (cliff) that rises above the sea along the coast of Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento. It is one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see. It is a short drive from our villa and is breathtaking.

La Scala dei Turchi is a rocky wall that rises sheer above the sea along the coast of Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento. This singular-looking cliff rises between two fine sand beaches, to access it you need to proceed along the coast and climb a climb resembling a large natural limestone staircase.

Among the many stairways you know, this is definitely one of the most unusual. You have probably already realized that this is not a real ladder, but of a spectacular stretch of coast thanks to its peculiarity has become an icon of the Sicilian seaside tourism. This white cliff is located along the stretch of sea between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle (Agrigento) and its rock is made of a soft, limestone and a blinding white marl. The nature, as a great artist, has worked this material over time, making it soft and sinuous, with the help of the sea and the salty breeze, creating terraces and smoothing every corner. When you ascend the staircase, you will have the feeling of being in Wonderland, on a huge white meringue. The sea, taking advantage of this sparkling white, will be showing off his blue. A very intense blue, and while sitting on the steps admiring the sea, you will be surrounded by the most pleasant thoughts. The local boys are often diving from the most prominent steps, racing to decide who is the braver; we would not recommend imitating them even though looking at them is a real show. Here the sun becomes dazzling, but to climb safely you should go barefoot or with your slippers, you just have to be careful not to slip, especially on wet rocks. The more daring will reach through the stairway the beach to the west and will then be rewarded with a less frequented place for bathing. By the way, the name Scale of the Turks seems to derive from the fact that in ancient times the ships of marauding Arabs and Turks found shelter in this bay.

Scala dei Turchi is a wonderful cliff located in one of the most spectacular and evocative corners overlooking the Strait of Sicily. It is a wall of calcareous marl which is blinding white in color, and composed of limestone and clay. It rises above sea level along the coast between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, in the province of Agrigento. Created over the centuries through the continuous movement of water and wind, it slowly took the shape of an enormous staircase thus called the ‘Scala dei Turchi’ (Stair of Turks). According to ancient legends, the natural formation was once used by Turkish pirates who, during their invasions, would climb along the steps and loot nearby villages. This breathtaking beauty, was fairly untouched and visited only by a few local bathers until just a few years ago. It has now become a popular attraction thanks to its appearance in a famous TV series, films and commercials. Since then this enchanted place has attracted many onlookers and today the marly promontory is the destination of many tourists, who like to lie down along the very white natural beds to sunbathe and swim in the crystal-clear waters. It has also become known as the perfect selfie spot, and in 2018 it garnered over 108,200 hashtags on Instagram making it one of the most popular summer destinations for social users in that year.
