Karaköy is a district of Istanbul's Beyoğlu district. It is one of the oldest commercial centers, famous for its banks and office buildings. It is the modern name of the old Galata district. It has come to the forefront as a port and trade center throughout history. It is located on the European side of the Bosphorus, at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Karaköy is one of the very historical areas of the city and one of the oldest. In the last quarter of the 19th century, it had become the financial center of the Ottoman Empire. Today, it is an important trade and transportation center.
