Shopping

My favourite place to buy spices, fresh herbs, tea specialities and asian food. Guess you do not come to Hungary to eat asian food, but you can also find here jams, honey, balsamic vinegar, wine vinegar handmade in Hungary. It is alltogether a pretty exciting spice shop.

Nagy Vásárcsarnok (Main Markethall) is an iconic place of Budapest, and the biggest markethall of the town. It was built in the 19th century. It is a very practical journey, because you can combine sightseeing with your daily shopping. There is an Aldi store on the -1th floor. On the first floor there is the market which provides fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, cheese and so. You can also get other food: all kind of olives, sweets and baked goods: salty scones, hungarian strudel and lángos. On the second floor there are souvenir shops and some restaurants.

PALOMA is an art courtyard - the place to buy high-quality and handcrafted jewellery, clothes, paintings and other items designed by hungarian artists. You have to keep your eyes open though if you want to find it, since PALOMA is hidden behind a huge gate and not visible from outside. Being the part of the beautiful Wagner house, it is worth to take a look even if you are not up for shopping. ATTENTION: other hungarian designer shops nearby, all along Kossuth Lajos street!

Interesting green spot and riverside party place for the adventurous.
Gellért Hill can be reached easily if you cross Liberty bridge. The foot of the hill is about 20-25 minutes leisure walk from our apartment. Gellért Hill is the highest point of the city: there is a green, picturesque walk up to the top, from where you can see the whole panorama of Budapest.

Károlyi kert is a tiny park in the heart of the city. You can sit down here to have a little rest in the rush, maybe bring some sandwiches and have a little picnic. Károlyi kert (Károlyi Garden) is well known to the citizens by its own pet rabbit, Károly (Charles). Károly is a huge male rabbit, living next to male toilet. Actually he is Károly the Second. The statue of Károly the First can be seen in the little park. One of Budapest's most famous ruin pubs, Csendes, and its restaurant is just next to the park. During the warm days of spring, summer and autumn, you can sit outside with your drinks and snacks.

The City Park is the traditional picnic place for those who live on the Pest side of Budapest and it is where Vajdahunyad castle is located. There are bigger fields where you can play but you can also hide under a tree if that's what you need. If you are lucky, you can run into pop-up fairs or foodtruck festivals. The lake near Budapest Zoo is a good place to unwind, sunbathe and feed ducks.

Margaret Island - according to the legend - has been the home of princess Margaret, a hungarian saint. If you are interested, find her story here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_of_Hungary_(saint) Apart from that, Margaret Island is a good place to see a bit of nature during your everyday rush, to slow down, to have a picnic, taste lángos or chimney cake while you are sitting by the river or on a green field. The island has loads of flowers, some pretty ruins of the old monastery, a tiny pond. You can order a bizarre bicycle designed for at least 4 users (bringóhintó). There is a swimming pool and bars and clubs for those who seek for more than just a good walk and some chilling.

Népsziget or People's Island is often the home of festivals and concerts. Its most popular bar, Kabin (Cabine), is your spot if you want to be out of the city but still up for party. One of the most interesting festivals happening here is Dunapest festival, you can check the program out on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/dunapest/ During spring and autumn though Népsziget is rather for those who would like to find a little green adventure during their stay. The small head of the island is part of the national reserve program; it is a tiny floodplain forest which offers and interesting, wild walk between tree trunks rising from and stretching above the river. Brave people can walk in the water, and find a throne for themselves on one branch to watch sunset above Danube.

Zoo Budapest is the hugest zoo that can be found inside a city. With its iconic, beautiful buildings like the House of Elephants, it is one of the most famous spots in Budapest. Váci street is known as the Touristy shopping street of Budapest. But it is also a wonderful street to walk on, with a nice atmosphere, with tiny, old parallel streets leading towards Danube. If you look up, you can see why Budapest is sometimes called the city of architectural porn - you are surrounded here with all kind of architectural spectacle. Keep your eyes open and spot all some art deco, art noveau and more. Váci steet starts at Fővám tér, ten steps from your door and leads towards the also well-known Vörösmarty square, that is a place for fairs and food shows.

Buda castle is a must-see. With its iconic, tiny streets, one storey historic buildings, cobblestone backstreets you surely will feel like a time-traveler. The wider street by the walls of the castle are lined with ancient chesnut trees, offering shade from the sun during summer, or lighting up the scene with colors during autumn. Looking for a more quite place with an amazing view to the city? This surely is your place then. Well, this place surely is out of the basic touristy buzz of the city. Yet a nice place to get to know another face of the city. Budapest is not only about ruinpubs and the trashy romance of Pest side. Buda is greener, more quiet and still has its unique atmosphere. Manself Péter park is one of the highest pints with great view, and waaays less tourists around. Another sight, Gül Baba's tomb is also close by and is worth a visit. (Note: Péter Mansfeld had been a well-known figure of 1956's revolution and had been executed. This park is for his memory.)

UNDER RECONSTRUCTION Tomb of Gül Baba and his rose-garden. An iconic spot in Budapest, a fragment of old centuries enclosed by the modern city. Perfectly unique and simply nice. One of the best place for a date, or for those who look for unique historic spots that mostly remains unseen by average tourists. If judging by the neighborhood, you would expect unique style, but maybe not good kitchen - M. will prove you wrong. The restaurant has high quality dishes, always made of fresh, seasonal ingredients. The interior design is based on the idea of recycling, therefore most of the decoration is simple wall-drawing (mirrors, tables, plants etc.). To feel the vibe and to use the waiting-time as a moment of inspiration, you'll get a bucket of color pencils to draw on the table. How cool is that?

Massolit has started from Poland and luckily reached Budapest. It is not only a Cafe, it is like a second home for booklovers. While you have your coffee, tea, their famous Dirty Hippy (Chai latte with coffee) and homemade sweets, you can read all the books around you. And if you like them, buy them. They also sell translations of Hungarian authors, postcards by local artists and so on. The back yard is a wonderful, chill-out place during summer. Occasionally they arrange small concerts, literary events or film club events. At Massolit you can always be sure you meet nice people.

Drinks & Nightlife

Ruin pubs, jazz clubs, live music and so from the local favourites to the popular tourist attractions
Budapest is famous from its ruin-pubs and alternative pubs. Mélypont (Low point) is not the most frequented, rather a local favourite where students like hanging out. Still, it is a perfect place for a drink, surrounded by the atmosphere of the good old 80's. As many of the pubs in Budapest it is also in the basement, so be ready to go really Low.

Jedermann is one of my favourite place to catch an evening jazz concert for reasonable price. If you are lucky, you can catch a jam session as well. Its atmosphere is really friendly, they provide drinks and warm food, even during the concerts. There is a small inner garden for those who would had enough of the four walls and seeks for a calmer spot. Smoking is allowed outside in the garden. Look at their facebook page to see the upcoming events, and be sure to reserve your table in time!

Csendes is a flagship of the alternative wave in Budapest. The interior is similar to those in ruin pubs, but Csendes is rather a bar and cafe than a real pub. There is not a place for big parties or dancing, rather a place to chill off, have a good talk and meybe get drunk in the meantime. It is located near Károlyi garden, where you can sit outside during daytime. Csendes also has a diner part, and a vegan restaurant and cafe 1 min away in Henszlmann Imre street.

Fogas has once been a dentist's place, its name means "With Teeth". That's why you will see a picture of a dentil hanging outside. It is an iconic ruin pub of Budapest which now is merged with the former Instant. Ruin pubs have once been common houses, but after the war and economical crisis they remained in ruins. The pubs moved in in the 90's, keeping most of the original interior but transforming it to drinking places which provides a really unique, often bizarre and exciting atmosphere which is an absolute originality of Budapest. And especially of district VII.

Szimpla is the absolute favourite Ruin pub. Here you can discover the most what the house might have been before it was abandoned and turned into the most popular pub of the 7th district. You can walk around and check the rooms of the house that once had been home for thousands, and then just go with the flow of the absolutely enchanted and transformed place and enjoy the feeling of Budapest Bizarre. About ruin pubs, read more at my revew about Fogas Ház.

Trapéz is basically the realm of students, but it's so huge it offers place to everyone. Unlike the original ruin pubs, Trapéz is cleaner, more organized while has kept some of the strong points: the design, the atmosphere and the prices. Personally, I pretty much like this place.

Hunarian people love beer, but - unfortunately - that doesn't mean common hungarian beer is necessarily good. But wait before you judge! Élesztő has been one of the first home breweries that popped up in the city - and it offers amazing handcrafted beers. With its industrial style, the brewery close-by, with an open drinking-space inside and ever-changing offer of beers, you surely won't be disappointed. Every now and then they have brewing workshops - ask them if you are interested! (Rengeteg RomKafé nearby - for nonalcoholic drinks... well, chocolate.)

Not in mood for beer? Neither coffee or hot chocolate? Well, Élesztő ház is still your friend. Vinopiano is a newly opened winery that opened at the exact same spot. They make home brewed wines for fair price. It is worth a try for sure. Be careful though, we have a saying on that: "Wine after beer - that's a deal But beer after wine - will make you cry."

GoodSpirit bar has started as a tiny whiskey shop when I was a child. We often bought my dad's birthday present there. It is always good to see how good things grow bigger and become as popular as they deserve. Good Spirit bar is fancy, while manages to stay friendly, almost cozy and inviting. Obviously one of the most touristy places, but also one of the weirdest. Of you would like to meet people and do not mind crowd, Grandio open terrace is wonderful for you. Arts & Culture

One of the best museums of Budapest with an amazing location.
National Museum - apart from the beauty of the building, its historical significance (according to the urban legends, here started the national revolutionary march in 1848, 15th of March) and the chance to have a coffee while sitting ont he stairs like hungarian students do - always has interesting temporary exhibitions. The museum mostly focuses on history, but occasionally you can find photo exhibitions and sometimes paintings of famous artists. Budapest Music Center is one of the youngest buildings in the area, yet an iconic sight. It is a three-in-one music hall, music library and gastro-bar. Its program mostly offers contemporary jazz, blues, swing and classical music, but often you can find other genres as well. BMC is located by the riverside, and also has a dining area and a bar, from where you can have a romantic sight of the river and the boats passing by. It is an ideal place to chill out at night, or after a concert. Check out the program and ticket-info here: http://bmc.hu/

Another hidden museum - you have to cross some rather unpleasant streets to get to this beauty. But it is worth for sure - if you have heard abouth Roth Miksa's glass art or if you have never. Being one of the top glass-artists of his era, his works surely won't let you down. The workshop area of the master is currently under renovation but will open its gates soon.

Epreskert Art Colony was an artists' colony in Budapest in the last decades of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Most of the biggest figures of hungarian art had at least once a corner here. Now a wild garden and a gallery owned by Hungarian University of Arts, showing both works of the old masters and the new generation. A beautiful hidden spot for art lovers and seekers of uniqueness.

The museum of Gold will not show you hungarian arts or european culture but is a great collection of asian - mostly indian art of gold. The museum is pretty rich, beautiful and super-interesting for those interested in asian culture. Gross Arnold had been a talented figure of engraving. With his beautifully coloured and often playful pictures he is a well-known figure of Hungarian art. The cafe opened in his former workshop. Here you can see some of his best and most well-known pieces, have a delicious homemade cake, and also buy postcards and posters of the master. One of the smallest and friendliest places I got to know, and Gross Arnold's name is worth to be known.

Trapéz is a tiny gallery really close to the apartment. It mostly hosts contemporary hungarian artists working in the genres of modern and abstract. As the gallery is so small, you can literally see it in 20 minutes, it is a perfect spot between two long walks, in the morning (after having a coffee in the nearby Forest Cafe) or on your way home. Nearby Károlyi garden is a great spot think about your impressions and reset your mind for your next adventure.
