We highly recommend a trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island if you fancy getting up close with some of New Zealand's amazing native birds. Tiri is a wildlife sanctuary, a short ~30 minute ferry ride from Gulf Harbour. Take a guided walk through the bush and you're sure to have close encounters with tui, saddleback, fantails, kereru, and even the critically endangered takahe.

This beach changes dramatically between low and high tide. The bay is very shallow and at low tide the whole surface (right out to the mouth) is exposed. Great place to see mussels and pipis.
