Food Scene

Delicious thin pizzas cooked to order in a pizza oven. It's the best pizza on the peninsula. I order a 4 x 4 every time; spinach, feta, butternut and tomato. Stay a while and have a chat with T Bo. Or place your order, go up to the Swing and Stoep for a beer or two and have your pizza brought up to the bar when it's ready.

Sightseeing

https://www.simonstown.com Is a historic town, which is home to the local SA Navy base. It's a 5 minute drive from Glencairn, away along the coast. Take time to explore its Historic Mile, with a few grand buildings, a couple of museums and the picturesque harbour. Avoid the coach loads of tourists eating at the harbour restaurants. Instead, make a beeline for the Salty Sea Dog fish and chip shop just after the post office. Get your take away, sit by the harbour people watching, and seal spotting. Walk to the end of the jetty to take a look at the impressive bronze statue, The Standby Diver. Walk off your lunch by going up the old steps, towards the small mosque.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Swing and Stoep pub by Glen beach - Our local. The pub is located in a historic building, the old Glencairn Hotel. The first time we visited, almost 20 years ago, we sat in the small saloon bar and looked at all the B&W photos. Over the years it's seen many changes and it's a real community hub. During the week it's pretty quiet and the view from their deck over the nature reserve, across False Bay is awesome. The place really comes alive when there is a Springboks game being broadcasted. Good vibes, local beer. Live music some nights.

From Magpie drive over the mountain and enjoy the stunning scenic drive. It will take about 20 minutes to reach the beginning of the Constantia Wine route. Steenberg estate is the first winery on your left, take time to go in and taste some of their excellent wines. We love the Sauvignon Blanc.

So many vineyards it is impossible to list. If you enjoy wine tasting head out that way and try a few. Good ones I remember are Simonsig, Fairview, Hartenberg, Hazendal, Delheim, Del Aire Graeff Morgenhof and Zevenwacht but there are hundreds. Paarl and Franceshoek are also worth a visit. Off the beaten track you could try Robertson (Graham Beck, Springfield, Viljoensdrift) or the Elgin Valley for a more relaxed tasting experience.

Parks & Nature

Glencairn beach - it's a downhill stroll from Magpie holiday rental to our local beach, or just 5 minutes by car. Sure, all the 'beautiful people' head to popular Camps Bay and Muizenberg has loads of surfers. But for most of the year, our local beach is not usually busy with visitors. There is free parking by the railway track and sometimes there is a car guard you can tip for keeping an eye on your vehicle. Glen Vlei (nature reserve) - The nature reserve is a short walk away from Magpie. It's a haven for nature lovers, bird watchers and walkers. Our tip is to source your snacks from the Low Impact Living Project, a waste-free cafe and grocer just downstairs from the Glen Hotel.

From Scarborough, drive towards Cape Point. If you have time, you could stop at the Ostrich farm or curio market. Next, beat the crowds! Get an afternoon admission to Table Mountain National Park (Cape Point). If you are lucky, you have missed the coaches of tourists who get there in the morning. Take time to drive around within the park and head to some of the less visited spots like Dias Cross and Buffles Bay. Keep an eye out for zebra, antelopes and ostriches. Finally, walk up the iconic path to Cape Point for phenomenal ocean views at sunset.

Table Mountain National Park dominates. Nature rules. It's simply stunning! We're a little biased, but would say to visitors, allow a bit more time to head to the 'Far South' and explore the laid back peninsula. It will make a perfect antidote to spending time in town, as even though the city bowl is pretty chilled, it's still town. The peninsula is a 40 minute drive from the city and you can reach Cape Town's international airport within an hour. Come and enjoy Indian Ocean beaches, rugged Atlantic Ocean spots such as Scarborough and Misty cliffs and everything in between.

Arts & Culture

A few minutes drive away in the opposite direction, artsy Kalk Bay has an enduring boho vibe and everything you could ask for. It is a very popular spot, especially on the weekends and during the summer months. If parking is a problem, leave your car at nearby Glencairn station where there is a large car park. Take the train for the very short distance to Kalk Bay. Start and end your afternoon at The Brass Bell pub, which is directly on the platform. If you miss your train, you can order another pint! Take time to meander through he various rooms at the Artvark gallery for local artwork, crafts and jewellery. Kalk Bay Modern gallery showcases contemporary artists.

A trip you have to make to see the cell where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years. Former inmates take you round the prison and the atmosphere is sombre and sobering. It is well organised and boat trip is worth the price alone. Fantastic view of Table Mountain and Cape Town. It is a beautiful place because history was turned around by stubborn, resilient people.
