Entertainment & Activities

Amazing new inland surf centre - the first of its kind in the world. Just a mile from the house. Book a lesson and take your first step towards becoming a surf dude/dudette. Or just go along for a drink or lunch and look at the pros out on the waves.

High ropes course, plus a host of other things (including a junior high-ropes course for kids). Great for spending an afternoon. Nice cafe too. Good if it's raining too as (a) you're under the tree canopy, and (b) you'll be sweating/concentrating/screaming too much to notice....

Parks & Nature

Obviously climbing Snowdon is a must-do for many people. Our advice would be: don't walk up from Llanberis (the path is heaving with people and not that interesting). The Pyg Track and Miner's Track (both start at Pen-y-Pass) are much better. BUT the car park at Pen-y-Pass is usually full by 9am (or earlier). We prefer the Rhyd Ddu track that starts from the western side of Snowdon - it is much easier to park there, the views are great, and there are fewer people on it. Our 7-year-old daughter climbed this route in 2016 in under four hours.

Shopping

One of the best butchers you will find. Small local butcher with a small shop in Tal-y-Bont (main store is in Trefriw further up the valley). Highly, highly recommend the homemade pies, made by Marilyn. Filled with steak, or turkey and ham, with a delicious crust. Locally sourced meat from nearby farms. Also sells vegetables and other essentials. Open till 6pm, and on Saturdays.

Essentials

The post office sells essentials like newspapers, bread, butter, milk, tinned goods, cakes (!) as well as sorting out your post. Very friendly, and typically open late (until 7pm weekdays I think), and also on Sundays.

Arts & Culture

Medieval castle in the centre of Conwy. The castle is in great condition, with an informative visitor centre. Climb the towers and look at the Conwy estuary, Great Orme in Llandudno, and the beautiful Conwy valley. It was built by King Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. The castle played an important part in several wars, and it withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294. In 1401 it was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr - the legendary Welsh prince and freedom fighter. Look out for events in the castle, including open-air Shakespeare on a summer's evening. Magical.

Food Scene

The Tal-y-Cafn was recently refurbished and reopened. It is now an upmarket gastropub (around £7-10 starters and £15-20 mains). We went recently and very much enjoyed it - great quality food and friendly service. It is often full, so book ahead.
