Food scene

The closest real market! Like Bend itself, this petite (and locally owned) grocery is unbearably hip, offering ordering by text and a large selection of beer and wine.

Maybe this is average Chinese food, but it was a real treat when we’d go out to eat here when I was a child and I’m glad it’s still in business after all these decades. You wouldn’t think green beans in black bean sauce would be a huge hit with kids, but it’s pretty special! 8 minutes away by car.

Coincidentally on the opposite side of the intersection from Chan’s, this is actually a food truck with a covered outdoor seating area. Dad is a beans and rice enthusiast, and this is now his favorite.

Sightseeing

If you can make the 90-minute drive, you may love the crystal clear icy water, white sand beaches, and moss-draped conifers as much as I do. You’ll need to buy a Forest Service recreation pass to fully enjoy it.

For walks/bike rides/snowshoeing through the forest with lava views, visit Dad's trail. Dad says you have 40 years to make a trail. Although he claims he didn’t personally singlehandedly make this trail, I’m skeptical. But it’s received some recognition over the years and there is a legitimate place to park along the fence at the end of Osage Road where the trail begins. To get there, follow Cheyenne Road south to where it curves and ends, then take a little jog over to Mohawk and turn onto Osage.

This trail seems to traverse most of town at this point, so you might try entering it at the south end in our neighborhood and seeing where you end up! There are lots of access points, but if you take Brookswood Boulevard north from Baker Road and make the first physically available left after Elk Meadow Elementary School, then left again onto Snowbrush, you can park there on Snowbrush at Pine and follow a dirt road down the hill to the trail proper. Dad swears it’s not trespassing even though the signage is questionable; bonus views of a major irrigation diversion!

Shopping

Dad’s favorite thrift shop is just 15 minutes down the highway in Sunriver, and it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area on Friday or Saturday, the only days the store is open (the hours are short too!). Maybe don’t go first thing in the morning on Friday unless you identify as a semi-aggressive antiques reseller… but they get some lovely things from the surrounding resort community. You’ll also drive by a very popular spot to put in for a float on the Deschutes River.

It was such a pleasant surprise for us to discover this nursery right in our neighborhood about 2 miles down Baker Road, carrying a wide variety of conifers nestled into the ground under a canopy of large pines. We especially enjoyed the expert advice of the tree-loving staff, and recommend it if you’re looking for a living souvenir or just landscape inspiration.

If you like the blanket on our queen bed, it’s Pendleton’s Harding Jacquard pattern, dating back to a 1923 visit to Oregon by first lady Florence Harding and her husband Warren to dedicate a portion of the old Oregon Trail. You can shop in person for steep discounts at Bend Factory Stores, seven minutes away by car on the site of what was a gladiolus farm when I was little.
