Greenport

When you're itching to stretch your legs and get off of Shelter Island, Greenport is a great option. Park your car at the Shelter Island North Ferry parking lot, buy passenger tokens in the little white hut at the ferry terminal, and walk onto the ferry. The carousel in Greenport is always a big hit with kids, and the boardwalk and waterfront area is a great place for kids to run around and burn off energy before dinner. Some of our favorite places to eat are 1943 Pizza, Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market, First & South, the Frisky Oyster, American Beech and Lucharitos (early, before the bar area gets too loud).

Sightseeing

Besides beautiful nature trails, Mashomack offers plenty of programs all summer for adults and kids alike. Check their calendar of events. If you can snag a spot, definitely do the full moon guided kayak tour. When you're out hiking, take time to stand still and look around - you may see bluebirds zipping around the open grassy areas, or osprey and bald eagles soaring above you.

The farm stand at Sylvester Manor offers fresh produce, meats, eggs and cheese, but also has activities for kids most weekends - everything from sing-alongs to story reading to hay rides. There's usually an opportunity to pick your own [whatever is in season] and all are welcome to stroll around the farm. The old manor house, which is a short drive from the farm stand, has walking trails that are open to the public and hosts several concerts (some indoors, some outdoors) every summer.

Sag Harbor

You'll need a car to reach Sag Harbor, but it's a short drive from the South Ferry and is worth the trip. Sag Harbor is a picturesque old whaling village with lots of shopping, restaurants, and much more. There's a small movie theater as well as a playhouse in town and there are a few festivals during the summer out on the pier, so check the town calendar of events. The village itself is beautiful and full of charming old houses - get off the main drag and stroll around the side streets to take a peek at some of the historic whaling captain houses. Cavaniola's is a great place to pick up cheese, bread and charcuterie to take home (or sandwiches and other prepared foods to eat on the spot). Sagtown Coffee is a good spot for coffee and breakfast and lunch. If you're a meat eater, pick up homemade sausages and other meats for the grill at Schiavoni's Market. During the high season you'll need a reservation if you want to eat lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants in town, especially on the weekends.
