Right down at the harbour at Hellnar is Fjöruhúsið. Surrounded by the rocky bird cliffs, right under the Snæfells glacier. The cosy café seats two dozen inside but, on a sunny day, it is the outside seating that is always filled, as walkers take a rest and imbibe the beauty of the surroundings whilst enjoying a delicious snack or lunch. Open from Easter to October, the little family café provides seafood soup, homemade bread, vegetable or chicken quiche, pasta, waffles, a range of delicious cakes and drinks of all kinds, all with friendly service.

Skarðsvík is a small and rather exceptional beach in the landscape in Iceland. Surrounded by harsh and bare black lava, the soft orange-yellow beach conveys a convenient contrast to the surrounding landscape.

Neighbourhoods

Hellnar, located at the tip of the peninsula, is a convenient hub for those travelling in their own car, offering easy access to the incredible natural sites nearby. These include the Lóndrangar sea stacks, the mountain Kirkjufell, and the Ytri Tunga seal watching beach. When you are at Hellnar, it is difficult to imagine that this tiny hamlet on the south coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula used to be one of the largest fishing villages south of the glacier. With only a few people living there permanently today, it doesn't look like an ideal location for a fishing station. Currently, the tiny hamlet is more like a small tourist village. The attraction is the rocky shore, cliffs and strong currents bashing the shoreline. And by the coast, there doesn't seem to be much room to maneuver a rowboat, let alone a fishing vessel although a small dock still exists. At the shores of Hellnar are spectacular rock formations; much of the Snӕfellsnes Peninsula is incredibly dramatic along its coast, due to the previous volcanism of the area and the waves shattering the brittle lava rock that makes up the land.
