The castle and the approximately 160-hectare park have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1996. A main attraction in the castle park is the oldest existing zoo in the world, the Tiergarten Schönbrunn (16 ha). The palace and park are among the main tourist attractions in Vienna.

The Lainzer Tiergarten habitat and its location, size, geology and climate
The Lainzer Tiergarten is located in the west of the city of Vienna, in the eastern Vienna Woods. Its total area is 2,450 hectares - 1,945 hectares of which are forest areas. The enclosing wall of the Lainzer Tiergarten is around 22 kilometers long. From a geological point of view, this area can be assigned to the so-called flysch zone; Incidentally, characteristics of this zone are sandstone and marl rock, a clayey and heavy composition of the soil, as well as many ditches and streams - as you can find in the Lainzer Tiergarten.
The area of the zoo is located in the border area of the Pannonian climate in the east - characteristics here are high temperatures in summer and relatively little precipitation - and in the oceanic climate in the west - here low average annual temperatures and larger amounts of annual precipitation can be described as characteristic. Accordingly, there are also significant differences in temperature between the eastern and western parts of the Lainzer Tiergarten: the average temperature is around nine degrees Celsius, and the average annual precipitation is 750 millimeters.
