Places To Go [Popular Attractions Edition]

There's so much to do in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg it can be overwhelming! We've given you our honest reviews of popular attractions below to help you out! (Please note that we have a whole entire category dedicated to mini-golf because our little girl is obsessed, so be sure to check that out too.)
Dolly Parton excels at everything she lends her name to and this theme park is no exception. The rides are fun, the entertainment is top notch and we’d argue you won’t find a cleaner tourist attraction anywhere…the staff keeps everything so tidy! Highly recommend. And if you’re coming with a group, price out the Gold Level season pass that comes with 4 free tickets. Depending on the size of your group, it might be cheaper to purchase the season pass and use the free tickets all on one visit than to purchase admission for everyone even if the pass holder doesn't plan on returning the rest of the season.

We’d seen Anakeesta advertised for years and were thrilled to finally get to experience it for ourselves! We chose to take the “chondola” up the mountain which was an open air chairlift and might not be for everyone. (They also have enclosed “cabin” lifts or a hayride-style truck you can choose). The theme park at the top is extremely well done to a Disney-esque standard with everything picturesque, clean, and unlike anything I’ve ever encountered at a “theme park.” Our daughter loved the birdhouse themed playground (which is 3 stories tall and includes low-ropes course elements, 3 birdhouse-themed playhouses, a rope trampoline and lots of slides. We all enjoyed the scenic views, observation tower and rope bridges that stretched through the treetops. The restaurants were delicious and surprisingly reasonably priced. They have attractions you can add on including two mountain coasters and a zip line adventure. We didn’t opt for those, but did purchase tickets to their “Astra Lumina” night light show immersive walk experience. It was absolutely stunning and a highlight of our trip. We definitely recommend adding that to your adventure! This is a must-see that is worth the drive to Gatlinburg!

There are a number of dinner show options in town but we kept hearing the Pirates Voyage one recommended over and over and decided to make it our first dinner show experience. Featuring high diving pirates, beautiful mermaids and yes real live sea lions, what’s not to love? The entertainment was absolutely off the charts fantastic from stunt diving to acrobatics, aerial silks, trampoline stunts, juggling, fire tricks, animal performances; the list goes on. The action was truly non-stop. Our waiter was kind and helpful including accommodating dietary restrictions in our party to a tee. I honestly didn’t have super high expectations for the food, but it was really yummy and they offer a doggy bag if you can’t finish your plate. We had two six year olds with us and were shocked at how reasonably priced the souvenirs were compared to other shows we have attended elsewhere. Overall I’d say this I would probably be most enjoyed by families with kiddos based on the Pirate/mermaid theme, but honestly the tricks were all so impressive that I think anyone would come away amazed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here with our little one. The moving underwater sidewalk was the hit attraction for us as was the penguin parade where these adorable birds waddled around the hallways greeting visitors. We also enjoyed watching the shark feeding and blowing off some steam on the indoor playground. Highly recommend for anyone with little ones!

There are plenty of mountain coasters in the area but this is the only one I’m aware of where there are also goats to be fed while you’re there. I’m not a fan of roller coasters or thrill rides so I was a little nervous to try a mountain coaster, but they really are so fun. You control your own speed with a hand gear and the ride down the track is gentle and enjoyable. Great view of the area! Really unique experience and definitely recommend. We walked straight on to this attraction which was a win as many mountain coasters have long lines, however this coaster is one big uphill with sort of a corkscrew downhill so it’s not quite as interesting as some of the newer ones.

A destination all in itself, the Island boasts everything from thrill rides to moonshine tastings, shops to arcades and everything in between. Park for free in the adjacent lot and ride the trolly over and make sure you leave time to sit and watch the dancing fountains which is our favorite part of the experience.

I think we accidentally chose the busiest day of the season when we visited so to be honest, we were a bit overwhelmed with the crowds. That being said, there were lots of awesome attractions (although finding things for our 4 year old was a little bit of a challenge) and the Lazy River was a hit with the whole family! Make sure to bring your own beach towels as they are not provided, and we found the all day locker rental ($10 for a small locker which was plenty big enough for my backpack and a other items) to be reasonable and vital to our ability to enjoy the day. Also recommend wearing chacos or water shoes that you can keep on - the pavement was super hot and putting shoes on and off between rides would be complicated. All in all, a fabulous water park….if you’re into water parks. :)

Places to Go [Scenic Edition: Sightseeing/Hiking/Parks]

There is so much to see in the area beyond the tourist attractions so we’ve put together this guide of some of our very favorite places in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other more scenic settings.
This stunning 11 mile loop is perfect for literally everyone - with no admission fee! Those who want to passively enjoy nature will love driving, reading the booklet (available for $1 at the gate) and taking photos through their car windows at one of the many pull-over spots along the way. Those who want a more active experience will enjoy hiking some of the trails, exploring the various historic sights along the way and stopping at the visitors center. The views are breathtaking and the approximately 40 minutes each way drive to and from the Sweet Retreat is half the fun as it winds through beautiful Wears Valley and parts of Smoky Mountain National Park.

The Sugarlands Visitor's Center located just outside Gatlinburg is a great way to get information about Smoky Mountains National Park. They have a small museum/learning center with some exhibits about local wildlife, park rangers on duty to answer questions, and clean bathrooms as well as a gift-shop. A great first-stop to get information on your Smoky Mountain adventure.

Parking can be very limited (and make sure you have your parking pass!) but this hike is a perfect “great for most people” level trail. About a mile each way with at least *some* pavement the whole way (some of the blacktop is eroded, but we saw plenty of people pushing strollers) and gorgeous waterfalls at the end! Definitely recommend.

We looked at several trail ride options in the area and finally landed on Davy Crockett based on some reviews that mentioned how wonderful they are with children. Our six year old had done a few pony rides before in a small ring with someone leading her on foot but had never been on a trail ride on a real horse. She was a tiny bit nervous so Kelly our trail guide hooked up a lead line and put her right behind him to make her feel secure, but also encourage her that she could do this and let her feel independent. We had an amazing ride through beautiful woods and she loved every second of it. We will absolutely ride with them again next time we are in town and highly recommend if you are looking for an equestrian option in the area. 🐴 30 minutes - $27 🐴 1 hour - $38 🐴 1.5 hours - $56 🐴 2 hours - $75 🐴 half day - $200 🐴(All rates are before tax&tip) Reservations are preferred so give them a call before you go. Places To Go [Mini Golf Edition]

Our little one is somewhat of a mini-golf aficionado so we have putt-putted our way through the Smokies. Here are some of our favorites to make your experience a hole-in-one.
We cannot possibly recommend this place highly enough. The mini golf course is great with a whimsical bear and possum theme throughout; our six year old could not stop laughing at the statues and their antics throughout the course. Hole number 9 was by far our favorite; {spoiler alert} never have I ever hit a golf ball into the water on purpose, but what a fantastic gimmick! They also have a putting green at the beginning which is perfect for group photos, actual putting practice or killing time if there are groups in front of you. In addition their mountain coaster is INCREDIBLE! We loved it so much we rode it during the day and then came back and rode it at night as well; (there is a great bundle deal if you do this so we highly recommend.). The ride is long, there is both beautiful natural scenery and clever attractions to enjoy as you whiz by, and this coaster features new technology that allows the ride to be not only safer but more enjoyable. This place tops our recommendation list!

Hillbilly Golf is an incline railroad and a putt-putt course all wrapped up into one and who doesn't love that idea? Ride the railroad 300 feet up the hillside overlooking Gatlinburg and then golf your way 200 feet back down zigzagging across some zany hole designs. Hop back on the railroad for the last 100 feet back to the entrance. SUPER fun, but word to the wise - there aren't any restrooms so potty before you go - and because of the unique capacity restrictions of the incline railroad, lines can get long at peak times so be prepared to wait patiently.

Our little one is very into mini golf so my husband spent a good bit of time researching what the "best mini golf" in Pigeon Forge is and finally landed on this one. It was fabulous!!!! Boasting two courses - one inside, one outside (and a discount if you want to play both) as well as a full-tilt candy shop and indoor mini bowling (which was a huge hit with our family!) this place is seriously the best destination for families no matter the weather or time of year.

I checked out Fantasy Golf with my 4 year old and we had a lovely round of mini-golf. It's definitely one of the older mini-golf courses on the strip, but it was super clean and well maintained - it seemed like they had just repainted all the statues and attractions, and the turf was in excellent shape. It was also not crowded at all, the clerk was kind and helpful (and patiently listened to a random story our 4 year old told about our cat! haha.) and the cost wasn't too bad - about $13 for adults and kids 5 and under were free. All in all it might not be the fanciest or newest mini-golf place in Pigeon Forge, but we had a pleasant experience and felt like the owners care about their business.

Located in the same parking lot as an outlet mall, this could be a huge win if half your group wants to shop and the other half wants to do an activity. There are several courses available, all whimsically farm themed. We were delighted to win a free game by scoring a hole in one on a designated hole. You can also hit the attached arcade while you’re there.

The newest mini golf place in the area; this sea-adventure themed attraction has two courses: one indoors, one out, meaning golfing landlubbers can go to sea no matter the weath-arrrrrgh! The indoor course is mermaid themed and cleverly designed to make you feel as if you are going deeper underwater the further into the course you get. Sea creatures and mermaids lurk around every turn! Up on the rooftop outdoor course you’ll set sail with the pirates on their flying ship which includes an actual slide that our little one talked about nonstop. She was also gifted a “gem” by a real, live pirate who was “on board” which she treasures. They have a candy shop on site and she got her face painted for the very reasonable price of $5. This has joined our list of the top three mini golf establishments in PF and I know we will be back.

Our 5 year old absolutely loves mini-golf so we are slowly working our way through every course in the area. This one was especially great for kids with lots of fun photo-ops with the gigantic toy pieces. We went in early January and it was cool, overcast and breezy which was a bonus as there wasn't a lot of shade on the course. A few of the special effects weren't working - probably due to some recent bad weather - but our 5 year old had an absolute blast which meant we did too! Definitely a fun time!

Places to Eat [That Aren’t Pancakes]

Our review of things to eat that aren’t Pancakes!
For a truly local dining experience with a little New Orleans flair, we loved PawPaw’s catfish kitchen! The service was truly fast and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere felt authentic and local - not touristy and contrived. We highly recommend the shrimp and okra gumbo (flavorful and not too spicy) and the white chocolate bread pudding and of course, the catfish! We’ll be back again and again.

This local burger joint is located in Wears Valley and is a great halfway point stop-off between the National Park and The Sweet Retreat. We were hungry from a 5 mile hike in Cade's Cove when we stopped in and ordered the most delicious cheeseburgers and onion rings! I don't think I've ever had onion rings that yummy! The back porch looked like an amazing option for warm weather and beautiful views of the Wears Valley area. Highly Recommend.

We stumbled across this whilst researching local breweries for some guests and enjoyed a delicious meal there ourselves. While not a brewery itself, they do serve only local brews. Plus a full menu of food. Plus frequent live music! This charming food truck park is super clean and well maintained and in a beautiful spot in the valley to enjoy amazing scenery. Food trucks rotate depending on the day (we’ve had tacos, BBQ, burgers and boiled peanuts all on the same day) and there is a great kids playground, horseshoe pit and lots of picnic tables! Our family really enjoyed The Old Mill. It’s a family-style Southern Cookin’, meat-and-three type place and everything we ordered was delicious. It gets SUPER busy and they don’t take reservations, but you can call and ask how long the wait is before you go. We went around 4:15 one afternoon and walked right in but the line snaked all the way down the ramp and around the corner when we left.

Places to Eat [Pancakes Edition]

Our thoughts on the local Pancake houses!
If you've never eaten pancakes as big as your face while a flock of animatronic hens serenades you by clucking "Bohemian Rhapsody" & "Sweet Caroline" then let me tell you friend...you are MISSING OUT. We took our four year old and had an absolutely blast. Coffee was a little weak, but food was delicious. Word to the wise, share something with a friend...portions are MASSIVE!

We took our four year old and had an absolutely blast. Coffee was a little weak, but food was delicious. Word to the wise, share something with a friend...portions are MASSIVE!
Reagan's House of Pancakes has two locations - both within a mile and a half of The Sweet Retreat. They offer a full buffet, but we were a huge fan of the omelette which was huge and came with a generous side portion of 3 pancakes (or sub biscuits) and was a few dollars cheaper. With as much food as you get from a standard meal order, I can't possibly imagine needing an all-you-can-eat buffet. The waitress was incredibly kind and service was great throughout our experience. They even came around and took our photo and gave us a free postcard customized with our family photo (we had the option to purchase other prints and decided not to, but still got to keep the postcard.). Would definitely recommend based on service, food and portion size!

Shops Worth A Stop

If you’re looking to take home a souvenir of the Smokies or just browse unique finds, these are some of our favorite shops worth a stop!
The moment I set foot inside I wanted to move in. The merchandise (carefully curated by the absolutely precious operations manager) is all gorgeous and thoughtful; a mix of beloved brands like Pendleton and unique finds like hand-burned wooden wall-hangings. They carry kitchen decor and small items, clothing for men, women and children, a vast array of home decor and local finds. There is also a coffee counter that brews Starbucks coffee and if you’re lucky, one of the shopkeepers toy-Australian shepherds will be lounging around (she breeds them as a side business.) I cannot wait to return to this lovely shop time and time again, and look forward to riding the skylift and horses they keep around back as well. Truly a gem that I’d like to keep hidden, but also want all my guests to discover.

From local pottery and crafts to kid-friendly gifts and maybe most importantly the house-made-fudge, Mountain Brothers offers a delightful journey into the whimsical and handmade. Perfect for finding that unique gift for someone special…even if that someone is yourself. We won’t judge!

This newer attraction in Sevierville has everything from a tram to a mountain coaster to live animals and restaurant. Pretty sure this sounds like a win for our whole family.

This iconic hike has been enjoyed by so many of our guests but since it closes for the winter, we’ve never had a long enough trip to get out there while it was open. The walkway itself is a short 1/2 mile paved hike (each way), but word to the wise we’ve heard it’s steep so keep that in mind if you decide to make the trek.

This bird sanctuary is consistently recommended on Visit Pigeon Forge themed Social Media Groups and our kiddo loves zoos, animal parks and aquariums so we will surely check this out some day.

Although there are many mountain coasters in the area, this one is consistently the winner in the “best of PF” accolades. It’s conveniently located about a 1/2 mile from Dollywood and 1.5 miles from the Sweet Retreat which makes it a winner in our book before we’ve even tried it.

I was fascinated by the story of the Titanic long before Leo and Kate brought the story to the big screen (there was TOTALLY room for him on that plank, by the way!) so I can’t wait to visit this attraction some day. As you enter, you are assigned the identity of a Titanic passenger to help bring the story to life. A number of our guests have recommended this to us.

We found this cutie when a guest asked for a recommendation for a local bookseller. The couple who owns it has an obvious passion for both books and the local area and we can’t wait to stop in next time we are in town! Save the local bookstore!

My sister-in-law won’t go to Pigeon Forge without eating at the Apple Barn Applewood Farmhouse Grill. We haven't gotten the chance to check it out yet but it's an absolute favorite of many Smoky Mountain travelers. There are also adorable shops on site for you to enjoy.

The Peddler is a highly recommended place for “nice occasions” and they have the capability to make reservations ahead of time which is a huge win. Ask to be seated by the river as it’s a lovely view. You can call day-of for reservations or make them on their website.
