Neighbourhoods

THE BEACH HOUSE @ Pescatori Beach (Spiaggia dei Pescatori) Pescatori Beach is situated close to Ischia Porto and approx 200 m from the entrance of the ancient borgo of Ischia Ponte. In the past it was reserved only to fishermen (from which it derives its name) to pull their boats ashore from the sea and for their nets to dry. It's a picturesque golden/grey beach, inside a unique and suggestive landscape, with the Aragonese Castle to the right, the coloured houses of the Mandra (the location) and in front the rocky islands of Vivara and Procida. In the neighbourhood there are also an old Mulino (stone mill) and an ancient patrician residence. The remains of the old prison (carcere) which was active till the early 70’ has been preserved and are protected under the Beni Culturali Italiani and it now hosts music shows and artists galleries during the summer months. From October to May on the beach you will still find wooden boats owned by locals and there are still some fishmen going out to sea and bringing their catch to the beach to sell. From May to September the beach has every type of tourist service, several beach establishments where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas and in part is a free beach which is very popular and busy. The sea is blue, crystalline and clear with sandy floor, suitable for swimming and snorkelling. How to reach the Beach House Pescatori Beach is situated in the municipality of Ischia, location Mandra. It's easly reachable by bus, taxi and car. Walking is approx. 35 to 45 minutes away from the Harbour. The bus route is covered by line 7P, and the starting point is Ischia Porto (Harbour) For preferential rates and a hassle free journey our trusted taxi driver can be booked in advance (24 hours notice)

From Serrara Fontana there is a well-signposted path towards Mount Epomeo, the highest peak in Ischia at a height of 789 metres. The mountain slopes are covered in lush greenery and vineyards and affords views of the whole island of Ischia as well as Procida, Capri and the Gulf of Naples. Once at the peak you can enjoy the incredible views and relax at the restaurant and bar at the top before making your descent. You can start the tour from the main square in the small town of Fontana which can be reached by either a CS or CD bus. You'll be at the right stop when you see the small church with a statue of Jesus Christ outside. From the church, cross the road and turn left towards a little of group of signs that point up the hill towards Mount Epomeo which is 3km away at this point. The Castello Aragonese is a citadel with churches, convents, prisons, terraces, and historic residences encircled by a defensive wall, and is set on an islet off the coast of Ischia but connected to the mainland by a bridge built in the 1300s. Open daily all year Hours: 9AM to sunset Tickets: EUR 10 for adults; EUR 6 for children 10 to 14; free for children under 10 The path to visit the castle is about 2 kilometers and takes about 1.5 hours There are a number of flights of stairs, so the castle is not accessible to wheelchair users This medieval castle is the most famous symbol of Ischia, an island within the island. The first settlement can be dated to the 5th century BC, and the village was later enlarged and fortified by the Romans. In the 1400s, Alfonso d’Aragona built the castle in its present form and used it as a fortress during wartime and as a residence during peace. The end of the Aragon reign and the waves of plague in the 1600s brought gradual abandonment of the castle, which was used as a prison during the Bourbon reign. After the unification of Italy, the castle was abandoned until 1912, when is was purchased at auction by the Mattera family, who began restoring the complex. It is still owned by the same family today. The castle offers beautiful views inland to the peak of Mount Epomeo and out over the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius on the mainland, plus the Baia di Cartaromana, the small bay set just below the castle that is home to two towers: Michelangelo Tower and Guevara Tower. It is also the centerpiece to the Festa di Sant'Anna each July, the most important local celebration.

The Legend of the Crucifix The Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, located in Forio on a panoramic spot with a splendid view of the sea, houses a wooden crucifix from the 1400s which, according to a popular legend, was found in the sea by some sailors. Stuck on the island by a storm, the sailors temporarily placed the statue in the church, but were not able to carry it back out once the storm passed.
