Phenomenal Raman in a cute + intimate setting. There are many good vegetarian/vegan options and everything tastes wonderful. Be prepared to share an eating space - it's typically walk-in and in very Japanese style the space is used economically.

Great for Banh Mi or Vietnamese coffee; cheap and cheerful. Go either side of lunchtime to avoid the queues - it's popular with the locals.

Grungy Vegan Hipster Trash serve up some of the tastiest Americana-inspired burgers and shakes around. Can be on the lengthy end in terms of wait times, but pull up a chair, grab a beer and watch the world go by.

Yes its an institution, yes its well established, but the sheer array of delicious vegetarian meals and the reasonable price point still makes this place a local favourite time and time again.

City/town information

You're staying in the home of the coolest street in the world - right next to that street, in fact; Smith St Collingwood. There is serious vibe in this suburb. Whether you're a gap-toothed footy fan, a latte-sipping hipster, a grungy activist, a member of the LGBTI+ community or all of the above, there will be a spot for you to stake a claim on this street and find your people. Collingwood generally has a mixture of green spaces and high-rises and even boasts a children's farm if you need refuge from the urban buzz (though they sneakily placed it in the next suburb over, Abbotsford). Its mixture of on-trend shopping, offbeat culture mashups, live music and foody scene means there is never a dull moment in - yep, I'm saying it - the best suburb in Melbourne.

Next to the Children's Farm, this old convent turned therapeutic arts precinct is one of Melbourne's cultural gems. Home to the infamous lentil as anything, where bare-footed hippies eat their fill of lentils and mung beans for pocket change (it's actually a wonderful community initiative), there is on any one day an art exhibition happening, an ecstatic dance party running, an improv-theatre workshop happening as well as a bevvy of cafes and alternative therapies plying their trade in the hallowed halls of the Convent itself. A wonderful place to absorb some of Melbourne's more restful culture.

Very nicely appointed float centre run by a friend of mine. Grab a float and get one of the best nights sleep you've ever had afterwards - I know I did. The tea room is nice to linger in afterwards, and they have a very esoteric book collection to peruse if you're game. Use code SOFTLOFT when booking to get 15% off your float!
