Things to see and do around Central Lisbon

BAIXA - ALFAMA - CHIADO - SANTA CATARINA - BAIRRO ALTO - PRÍNCIPE REAL - AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE - CAIS DO SODRÉ **************************************************************************************************************************************** BAIXA is the heart of the city where some of the best shops and leisure activities can be found. In front you'll find the new riverside neighborhood that extends along the Tagus River. Spread on the hill between the Tagus river and the emblematic São Jorge Castle is ALFAMA with a maze of narrow Medieval streets and small squares and unique shops. It is a Fado home, the traditional Portuguese music. CHIADO is the most trendiest area in Lisbon with the fanciest bars, restaurants and shops in Lisbon, as well as beautiful “miradores” with incredible views, historic monuments, churches, theaters and plazas. In SANTA CATARINA area, located between Bairro Alto and Chiado, you'll find good bars and restaurants with terrace. BAIRRO ALTO is one of the most typical neighborhoods of the city, with narrow stone streets, secular houses and traditional markets. This district is best known for its many shops and fun places to go out at night. The charming PRÍNCIPE REAL neighborhood is known for its antique shops and the trendiest restaurants and bars, but it is also a residential neighborhood with gardens, beautiful squares and secular mansions. MARQUES DE POMBAL is right at the end of Parque Eduardo VII and connects the park with one of the capital’s main streets: AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE, also known as one of the top places to go shopping in Lisbon. This wide, tree-lined avenue is famous for its designer shops, 5-star hotels, terrace cafés and the beautiful old buildings. CAIS DO SODRÉ / SANTOS axis is one of the most trendy and irreverent places in the capital, an undisputed destination for tourism and leisure, with the advantage of combining charm of a historic area.

Saint Catherine's observation deck is located at the bottom of the Bairro Alto district. This is a very popular vantage point offering an excellent view of the river bank. It is also an ideal place to watch the sunset. On the terrace there is a sculpture of the monster Adamastor, who according to legend blocked the way and sent storms to Portuguese sailors sailing to India. The monster symbolizes the Cape of Tribulation, whose current name is the Cape of Good Hope.

Lisbon’s main botanical garden has over 10,000 plants and is quite large (covering 10 acres, or 4 hectares), but you wouldn't know it from outside. It's accessed through a gate on one of the busiest streets of the Príncipe Real district, and only by the ticket office do you notice the dense vegetation.
