Drinks & Nightlife

If you find yourself in the Orchard area at night and want a quiet drink and a little supper, Blackbird serves really good food and reasonably-priced drinks. I vote truffle fries and mushroom pizza.

One of the best ways to enjoy Singapore is from very far aboveground. 1-Altitude is located in the Raffles Place district and it's one of my all-time favorite sky bars. As the tallest sky bar in Singapore I've often found myself looking down at the traffic and skyscrapers below, watching the world go by as if they were all just toys in a Lego set. It's wildly breezy up there of course, and often your mobile reception gets switched over to the Indonesian network because they're just across the harbour. Comes with loud music and a lively mix of people.

LeVel33 is a skybar in the Raffles Place District that serves great drinks and a postcard-worthy view of the Marina Bay area. It also happens to be a craft brewery, if you're on the lookout for some unique beer to try. Expect a quieter crowd here, people catching up with each other over slowly nursed drinks.

Parks & Nature

Most parks go to sleep at night in Singapore, but this one comes alive at night. Located in Northern Singapore it's out of the way for most travellers, but lots of locals (especially the young adults) like to go there at night just to sit with friends, enjoy a little (non-alcoholic) drink and enjoy the breezy night air. Beware though - the easy part is getting there. Getting back is not so easy. Not recommended unless you've got a mobile data SIM card for your phone and access to Uber.

The Lower Pierce Reservoir is located in Northern Singapore and is the easier reservoir to get to. My favourite really is the Upper Pierce Reservoir (which, as the name suggests, is further up from the lower one), but that is a real hike to get to without a car. The Lower Pierce Reservoir has a beautiful boardwalk and is a nice place to go to in the early morning when local residents are out by the waterfront just practicing their taichi.

East Coast Park is one of Singapore's biggest parks, developed specifically for residents to cycle, jog, picnic, camp, fish and practice water sports. It is home to several eateries - enjoy cheap local fare at the East Coast Lagoon Food Centre (my friend's mom runs the hokkien mee stall, go check it out!), or a luxurious chinese seafood dinner at the East Coast Seafood Centre (waterfront dining). In the daytime, the Parkland Green area provides great options for brunch, coffee and/or beer. Fully enjoying the park will take a whole day - come prepared with water, expect it to be unbearably sunny and dress to get sweaty.

Upper Thomson Road is an enclave in Northern Singapore that is host to a number of local eateries and ice cream parlours. In the day you'll find no lack of options for breakfast/brunch - whether you're looking for prata or eggs benedict, this district's got you covered. This is completely off the tourist track - if you're looking to see how young Singaporean adults spend their nights, come here for a late dinner and stay for supper.

This is my favourite place to eat crab, ever. It's out of the way in Northern Singapore and few tourists ever make it all the way out here but they serve (in my opinion) the best black pepper crab and chili crab in Singapore. Also, the crab is comparatively inexpensive. It's not a fancy restaurant like more famous ones you'll see in your guidebook, it's more like a coffeeshop but that doesn't mean the food isn't just as good, if not better. Call ahead to make reservations on weekend nights.

Singapore's food centres are legendary, but you have to know whether the one you're headed to is a "morning market" or a "night market" - many food centres that open at night are barely alive in the day, and vice versa because they serve a different crowd. The Old Airport Road Food Centre is best known for breakfast and lunch - among the best things to try: Rojak, Prawn Noodles and Hokkien Mee.

The Geylang Serai Market is within walking distance of our home, and houses the largest concentration of Malay food and groceries in one premise. Once characterised by a smokey atmosphere, orders yelled across the room in dialect, rickety plastic chairs and tables that tottered where they stood, there's a new wave of hipster zi char stalls coming up and they boast air-conditioned comfort while serving up wok-fried food that's every bit as good as in the "authentic" coffeeshops. Char specialises in cantonese cuisine, particularly the specialty of roast meat. Everything on that menu is great. Just go for it.

All the best durians in Southeast Asia come to Singapore, and most them come to Durian Lingers. Trust us: we're crazy about durians. Who else can say they've stayed on a durian farm twice and sampled almost every type of durian available on the market? We can. Trustworthy durian sellers are hard to come by in Singapore (although that's improving with the transparency of information that comes with the internet), if you'd like to us to come recommend something for you to try please give us a call! Chinese Hotpot - their claim to fame is the collagen soup made from shark bones. I know, I know, shark's fin debate and all that. While we don't support the consumption of shark's fin, we're leaning a little toward this use of the shark bones as it suggests that whoever killed this shark probably used a lot more of it than is depicted in the documentaries? Regardless, you've been warned. It is delicious. And constantly booked out. They take bookings on Chope 14 days in advance and the latest I've ever managed to log a booking was 7 days in advance via phone. They operate till 3 am in the morning. Perfect for midnight munchies.

Because Chai Tow Kway! Also known as carrot cake. They don't make 'em like this anymore nowadays, all scattered and shattered and delicious. Everyone just fried it all into an omelette-esque pancake (which I hate), so I love letting everyone know when I've found the kind of carrot cake I love! Also good: wonton mee and mutton soup. It doesn't hurt that on Sundays, what seems like Singapore's last remaining bird lovers congregate in the block next door for their weekly bird meet-ups, where the birds sing to each other and have a good chat and catch-up.

Nakhon has become almost ubiquitous across Singapore, but they're still great. I'll be honest, the first time I tasted it I hated it because I'd just gotten back from Bangkok; but either the cooking's improved or I've just gotten more distance from that trip because it seems pretty good value for money now! Also, a good option for lunch if you've spent the morning having lunch at Sin Hon Yun and then the late morning perusing the heartland shops in the vicinity.

I would say that the Esplanade was one of Singapore's first forays into modern architecture. There was such a fuss over the pronunciation of the name when it was first announced, you wouldn't believe. To many people it's also known affectionately as the Durian, because of its spikey exterior. My favourite way to enjoy this place is to come sit by the waterfront outside on a weekday evening watching as the corporate world starts to wind down, then going inside to catch a show at night. The Esplanade is also home to our only arts library - you'll find a whole collection of music scores and materials related to art, photography, filmography and dance on the top floor.

If you only have time for one museum in Singapore, pick this one. Entry is not expensive, and the range of exhibits is always scintillating and educational. The permanent exhibits give a great overview of Singapore's history, while the visiting exhibits are often a fun addition to the day. Expect weekends to be crowded, I usually prefer to go on weekday afternoons just to enjoy more silence and space.
