Educate yourself. See how Lake Pend Oreille is used for more than just boating and fishing. Albeni Falls Dam was authorized by Congress in the 1950 Flood Control Act, and construction was completed in 1955. The dam is located at the site of natural waterfalls that impounded Lake Pend Oreille. On completion, the 90-foot-tall dam increased the storage of Lake Pend Oreille and reduced upstream and downstream flood risks. The dam is made up of a powerhouse with three generating turbine units and a spillway. Tours and hours vary so please review prior to making the trip south. https://www.nwd.usace.army.mil/CRSO/Project-Locations/Albeni-Falls

The Gold Hill Trail is one of the most popular for local hikers and mountain bikers, a 3.7-mile track that can be moderate or strenuous – depending on whether you hike or ride it up or down, or as most do, both ways. The beauty of Beehives is that at roughly seven miles round-trip, and 2,000+ feet in elevation, it’s long and steep enough to make you feel like you’ve earned it a bit. It’ll make the new and out-of-shape sweat and suffer some, and it will make the legs of even an experienced hiker burn a little. Yet, it’s short enough that a motivated person with a light pack could cruise, or trail-run it out and back in a day. This hike begins at 4,420 feet and climbs 6,460 feet in 4.5 miles. The trail leads through a thick forest with views of surrounding granite mountains. The forest floor is covered with wild blueberries in the late summer and fall. To get to the trailhead, drive north on highway 95 from Sandpoint and turn left onto Pack River Road. Drive approximately 19 miles and look for the sign on the left for Beehive Lakes Trailhead. The road is passable but I would recommend 4 wheel drive.

One of the closest and nicest hikes adjacent to Sandpoint, the Mickinnick is a challenging trail that rises more than 2,000 feet in its 3.5-mile length (meaning, a round-trip hike is 7 miles). But the workout is certainly worth it, affording splendid views as you climb up through big granite features amid open forests and spring-summer wildflowers. On warm summer days, the east-facing aspect of the trail makes it more user-friendly in the afternoon. The trail ends on a rocky knob commanding a view of Sandpoint, the Long Bridge, the Cabinet Mountains and Lake Pend Oreille. 400 Woodland Drive Sandpoint, ID 83864

Fishing or floating the Kootenai River. The Idaho section of the Kootenai flows through a beautiful canyon with virtually no access, except by boat. The seclusion and isolation of the river adds to its Idaho ruggedness and beauty. The Kootenai River provides room to fish with most days leaving you the river to yourself. This classic large river holds many species of fish and is best fished from a drift boat. Species include Redband Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout, Mountain Whitefish, Burbot, and Sturgeon! https://www.longdriftoutfitters.com Tel. 303.917.2822 Sandpoint, ID Longdriftoutfitters@gmail.com

Evans Landing Trail leads 2 miles down to a beach at the landing on the west side of Lake Pend Oreille. A multitude of switchbacks make for a gentle grade, beginning at the top of Kreiger Creek on Trail No. 64. The slope becomes extremely steep closer to the lake, however. The remains of an old cabin are tucked away behind some ponderosa pine trees, and nearby is a picnic table on the edge of the stony beach, plus a vault toilet. Access is 17 miles south of Sandpoint on U.S. Highway 95 via the southern end of Blacktail Road. Follow it east 2.6 miles to Little Blacktail Road, turn east again and go another 2.6 miles past one trail sign to East Ridge Road where a second trail sign indicates the way to the trailhead. Take a right on East Ridge Road, go a half mile and turn left onto a short spur road and the parking area. www.alltrails.com/trail/us/idaho/evans-landing

This stunning waterfall in the Selkirk Mountains is a two-for-one hike with both upper and lower falls. Admittedly, the upper falls are more spectacular, but an easy 1.7-mile trail, out and back, means there’s no reason not to make time for both falls. The hike will take you through an old-growth forest with towering western red cedar and ponderosa pine. A short walk on the trail will lead you to a fork where you can visit the lower or upper falls. Both have viewing platforms with the upper falls offering a rocky ledge and felled trees for picture-perfect views.

While some might argue it’s a cascade rather than a waterfall, the serene surroundings make Grouse Creek Falls a wonderful addition to a northern Idaho waterfall tour. A roughly half-mile hike along a rocky trail will take you to a series of sea-green cascades. You’ll have to wade through the water around a large boulder to see the waterfalls, so water shoes are a good idea for this hike. While the trail is short, it can get steep, and there are sections where you’ll have to walk through medium-sized rocks. Before the falls, the trail forks, and you can go uphill or towards the creek. The uphill route is steep, leading to a lookout point over the falls. The trail to the right stays along the water and is better suited for young kids. Directions: Head east on Highway 200 from Sandpoint. Turn left on Colburn Culver Road. Drive 5.5 miles and turn right onto Grouse Creek Cut Off Road. After 1.5 miles, turn right onto Grouse Creek Road. Continue 4 miles till you see an unmarked road that veers to the right. Turn right onto the unmarked road, which leads right to the parking lot.

Tucked into the top of northern Idaho, about two miles from the border of Canada, is Copper Falls, the tallest waterfall of the bunch. The thin silvery falls drop from a staggering 225 feet and is a sight to behold. An easy 1.4-mile loop trail takes you through a lovely wooded forest to a lower view of the falls and an upper view from an observation deck. The waterfalls are powerful, so be prepared for a cooling waterfall mist the closer you get. While Copper Falls is at its most powerful in the spring, it’s also a popular spot for daring ice climbers who scale the frozen falls. For a true Idaho adventure, suit up for winter weather and hike the snowy trail to see a frozen waterfall and maybe even a few ice climbers. You can tack Copper Falls onto your Snow Creek and Myrtle Falls itinerary if you want a full day of waterfall hikes. Directions: Head north on Highway 95 from Bonners Ferry. After crossing the Moyie River, immediately turn right at Copper Falls Road onto road #2517. Follow the gravel road about 2.5 miles to the parking lot and trailhead.

Treat yourself and family to locally grown fresh produce, baked goods and handcrafted arts and crafts. Several farmers are certified organic and will have signs noting this at their stand. Market is open every Wednesday 3:00pm-6:00pm and Saturday 9:00am-1:00pm at Farmin Park, The Fountain – Third Ave and Oak St. Runs May - October Tip: Saturday’s market is the best day to visit as more vendors present. There’s local food trucks offering tasty breakfast treats, coffees and lunch specials adjacent to the Farmer’s Market. Most vendors accept credit/debit cards but suggest having some cash in case a booth you desire doesn’t.
