Cuc Gach Quan was once a French colonial mansion and boasts both the old, such as antique wooden furniture and a reel-to-reel tape machine, and the new, such as an interior fish pond and floating staircase. It is a stunning setting, but be warned: the staircase is a little steep and there are some low thresholds, so even shorter people should be prepared to duck if they find themselves going to the second floor. And while I like the antique furniture, you may want to avoid some of the stranger places you can be seated, such as a four-poster bed. While the decor is special, it’s the food that really makes Cuc Gach Quan stand out. The menu is huge, encompassing a wide variety of traditional, Vietnamese countryside cuisine, making it easy to get a little overwhelmed when ordering. The owners pride themselves on the fact that they are an organic restaurant, serving fertilizer-free rice and preservative-free meats and vegetables. While everything they make seems to be delicious, I recommend their house-made tofu, lightly fried with lemongrass and chillies, and the sea bass, stewed in a claypot at your table along with an assortment vegetables. Also, try one their fresh juices, which are sugar free and served with a side of honey, and for dessert their house-made banana ice cream does the business. Dishes are served family-style and prices are reasonable, at around 80,000 VND per dish. With the restaurant’s growing reputation, it’s worth making a reservation in advance.

Co Ngu specialises in rice dishes, and the menu is thick with choices of things to eat with that rice. You’ll find most of the menu dedicated to a variety of meats, however a number of vegetarian options are offered as well. Generally when you order, you’ll be given a large plate of rice, with some vegetables on the side, then you’ll be served your order simmering in a clay pot. The tuna, cooked in a clay pot with pineapple, was particularly tasty, tender and juicy, as was the fried rice with shredded pork served in a halved pineapple. Prices are extremely reasonable, with most plates starting around the 50,000 VND mark. During lunch you can choose one of three dishes off their set menu for just 45,000 VND.

ust few blocks from the entrance to the Reunification Palace, Saigon’s War Remnants Museum offers a narrative of the war from the North Vietnamese perspective. Opened in late 1975 and located on Vo Van Tan in District 3 in the former US Information Service Building, the museum was originally called The House for Displaying War Crimes of American Imperialism and the Puppet Government. Later, this was shortened to the Museum of American War Crimes and then to the simpler War Crimes Museum, which remained the name until the early 1990s. Although the name has changed, the museum’s sentiments have not; it heavily focuses on displaying the crimes and atrocities of war and the emphasis is on the horrors perpetrated by the Americans. The result is a somewhat one-sided story presentation which may feel unfamiliar or unfair to some attendees -- bias aside, the museum gives a great lesson in the horrors of war.
