Parks & Nature

Area of special scientific interest for birds and native plants. Google have marked the position of this area incorrectly .. it is the area between the sea and south of the GC500. It is a lovely place for a quiet walk, beachcombing, bird spotting (hawks, wading birds, migratory birds) (there are information plaques dotted around that indicate things of particular interest). There are also the remains of old salt works dating from the 15th century that sometimes attracted the attention of British and Dutch pirates. Castillo (Castle) del Romeral once had a fort ... hence its name to defend the area from marauders. Only a tiny, sad fragment of the fort remains ... hidden away in the village.

This trail starts off with an ugly view of the cement works but once past that you enter a hidden canyon (barranco) filled with native plants. It is not a difficult walk but you need to be reasonably fit and have full mobility. You need proper shoes because the floor of the canyon is extremely rocky from fallen boulders and you will need to clamber over them. Eventually you will come to some ponds with frogs and red dragonflies hovering around. It is a great place to sit and have a bite to eat.

Playa del Cabrón is a marine nature reserve. It is a lovely beach in a hidden cove. This is where I like to go snorkelling. You can see cuttlefish, octopus, rays, sea cucumber, fish. Or you can just take a book and sunbathe (there are no shops here so take something with you to drink/eat).

Sightseeing

This is a stunning valley filled with native plants. It is famous for its caves. The original inhabitants of the island (before the Spanish) lived in caves in this valley (there is a visitors centre at the entrance to the valley that is worth a visit). Today people still live in caves here. There is a cave church, cave houses, cave restaurants. It is a fantastic experience to have lunch in a cave. I highly recommend a visit to this valley.
