Food Scene

This is a must for any travellers to Golden Bay! It's a delightfully rustic bar/restaurant tucked away in a bush setting half way between Takaka and Collingwood, and only about 7 minutes drive from Patons Rock. They brew their own cleverly named beers and ciders in the brewery out the back, their menu is basic but scrumptious and caters for vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs etc. Very child friendly with a fabulous outdoor swing made from a tractor tyre, and is a well known music venue (especially New Years Eve!).

Golden Bays own little Bakery tucked away in a funky little cottage at Tukurua, on the way to Collingwood. The boys made glorious sourdough loaves and sweet treats, and take their goodies to the weekly local Saturday Market in Takaka.

Pleasant walks

One of the nicest places to spend time wandering around lush bush, glorious fully mature trees, native ferns, tiny streams, native bird life. On the way from Takaka to Collingwood you can turn into the carpark off the main road and within moments forget that there even is a road nearby! In the letter box at the start of the track are maps of the park (which you are encouraged to take) showing all the trails and their names, so you'll know where you are by the many hand carved signposts. This suits all ages and fitness levels, and the shade is a wonderful break on a hot sunny day. Only a few minutes drive away is the world famous Mussel Inn where you can stop in for a cold beer, wine, cider, tea, coffee, juice, snack, lunch, dinner......

Sightseeing

The Langford Store is nestled in the heart of the Aorere valley, 15 minutes inland from Collingwood on the way to the Heaphy track. This iconic general store and post office has been providing essentials to the Bainham community and travellers since 1928. Enjoy a pot of tea or an espresso coffee, served with sublime sweet treats. Soak up the sunshine and the tranquility of the surrounding scenery, whilst you write a postcard home or just rest a moment with friends. Owners Sukhita and Will have turned the storeroom into a gallery space for local artists to exhibit their work and The gallery is stacked to the gunnels with a great collection of nostalgic items, which all add to the charm and beauty of the historic store. With some quiet jazz playing in the background, great coffee, tea and sweet treats, you’ve found the perfect place for a trip down memory lane.
