Pickles is an excellent deli for sandwiches and the like, they also do packed box lunches (see the menu in this pack) to take along for your adventures. They aren’t open on weekends though, so for weekdays only.

This rooftop bar can be found in the Vanderbilt Hotel and it overlooks Newport and the bay. It’s amazing place for a sunset cocktail. They have food as well, but it’s all fairly pricey. We prefer to go for a drink and then travel elsewhere for dinner. There is a paid parking lot next door to the hotel that’s reasonably priced.

We prefer to go for a drink and then travel elsewhere for dinner. There is a paid parking lot next door to the hotel that’s reasonably priced.
Behind the Gurney’s Hotel. This outside bar sits on the water looking out to the Newport Bridge. Often, they have live bands. This place is more about the atmosphere. You can get food here as well, but we prefer other places.

The Ocean Drive is spectacular! From King’s Park to Bellevue Ave, every inch is gorgeous and full of history and grand architecture and sweeping ocean views and peeks at the rich and famous and beaches and wild life and agricultural …and on and on. These photos do not do justice.
This is how we do it:
Get an early start if you want to tackle it all in one day. Take the cooler with the beverages of your choice and an extra layer for after sunset!
Start at King’s Park on Wellington Ave. for a dip in the ocean, a play on the swings, a nod to Rochambeau & Ida Lewis and a magical view of the harbor. There are a couple of diamonds if you brought your baseball/softball gear.
If you didn’t pack sustenance, you can go to Ash Mart just up the road to pick up snacks and a packed lunch. Weird name but great food! 2 Carroll Ave, Newport, RI 02840. You can also order ahead online at www.ashmartdeli.com
Carry on to Ft Adams via Harrison Ave to explore the old Fort and the grounds – they have Guided tours as well https://fortadams.org/visit-fort-adams/
From here you may want to bear left at Brenton Rd and left again to follow Ocean Ave all the way to Bellevue Ave while it’s still light, but if you can, do that half another day…
Then on to the lawn at Castle Hill. Enjoy a refreshment and amazing view of the parade of boats and yachts passing by.
Head over to Brenton State Park for a walk around the stone tower, fly a kite, I think you may be able to rent or buy one from the Kit’s Kites truck there, but not sure of the hours and days. Climb the rocks, explore the tidal pools, listen to the roar of the waves and get ready for the best sunset in Newport!
The drive home is less interesting in the dark so be sure to plan an hour or so another day to drive the other direction starting on Bellevue Ave, perfect addition to a mansion tour day.

Start this trip on Bellevue Avenue, home to the Mansions. The Vanderbilt’s Marble House and The Breakers are the most popular and rightfully so. The Breakers includes a deeper look at the servant’s areas and utilities, the electrical system is quite a sight. If you have time for a few, Belcourt is unique, though not as grand as the others and on the “wrong” side of the street, I think the interesting background and history make up for it. The Elms and Doris Duke’s Break Point are worth a visit as well.
Of course, just a slow cruise along is enjoyable too or a great route for cycling. Unfortunately, there are no bike lanes, narrow roads and many blind curves on the Ocean Drive, so best suited for the very capable, confident & careful cyclist.
Follow Bellevue south past Break Point to join Ocean Ave. You’ll pass the beaches on your left, mostly private but Gooseberry Beach is open to all and is great for kids due to the usually gentle surf and tidal pools for exploration. They have a hearty snack bar too so maybe a stop for lunch and a swim.
From there you can follow Ocean Ave, and I recommend turning off on all the little roads if you enjoy looking at homes. The scenic tour app may have some gems of information back in there. Keep your GPS on so you can always turn back to Ocean Ave after venturing inward. You don’t want to miss any of the Ocean Drive.
Find Kings Beach, different from King’s Park, for a venture on the rocks. Watch out for people fishing and their lines, it’s a favorite spot.
To the east of Kings Beach is Jay Leno’s estate and Judge Judy’s is easy to see from the front on Beacon Hill Road.
If you time it right enjoy sunset and Brenton Point!

Newport Mansions Preservation Society

The start of Cliff Walk is about 1.4 miles from here. You can do a 6-mile round trip walk in a couple of hours, walking along Easton’s Beach to and from. There is very little parking in the area, you can try the Easton’s Beach parking lot or Narragansett Ave. You can also use the trolley tours for a nearby drop off.
Easy walking surfaces for all levels in the first section.
Or you can do the longer hike and do “the whole Cliff Walk” as we call it, which includes traversing some rocky area. Great exercise and beautiful scenery.
