Plan ahead for the right transportation getting around.
Some areas are only accessible with 4x4s, boats, snow machines, etc. Travel around Fairbanks in 4-wheel-drive vehicles is a must for winter to deal with the ice and snow. Be sure you research getting to the places you plan to visit during the time of year you will be here so you can plan accordingly.

Be sure to pack clothing appropriate for the area and time of year you will be visiting. Mornings can be cool in the spring but hot in the afternoon. Bring "layers" you can take off or put on as needed for the temperature changes.

Moose, Caribou/Reindeer, Black Bear, Fox, Lynx and even Polar Bears live and roam in the great Alaskan interior in Fairbanks. Always be cautious of your surroundings and keep an eye out for animals. Bring along bear spray and/or other appropriate protection from wildlife if they are typically spotted where you are staying or will be visiting. Safety first!

The bus runs from Monday to Friday only. Otherwise, prepare for a cold half-mile walk to and from the bus stop. It can take you on a route to the university (about 15 minutes) or it can connect you to the downtown hub where you can transfer to North Pole or anywhere else in Fairbanks.

There are tons of trails in Fairbanks and the surrounding areas. Bikes are a great way to go exploring.
