Just across the road (at the back of the shops you can see from the balcony!) is this nice little cafe, friendly staff and great coffee. They also do meals all day and have amazing icecream, open til late most nights.

A nice Thai restaurant and takeaway, practically across the road. Fast and friendly service, but you may need to book if you want to dine in as they have a very small space.

This not-so-little deli and fine food store is just one reason to visit the Parap Village shops. In the same stretch you will find Elevated Boutique (my favourite place to buy earrings!!), and just around the corner is Mad About Coffee if you are like me addicted to the good stuff this is where to get it!

The Sailing club is a very popular sunset dinner and drinks venue, and is about 900m from the door! Be warned though it's a little bit uphill on the way back - you can always get a taxi! A great menu and I recommend getting there and ordering before the sunset so you avoid the kitchen rush and can just sit back and relax with a glass or two of something refreshing!

Food truck with great fish and chips, I go here regularly! Check on Facebook to make sure you get them on the right night - sometimes they are in Nightcliff, which I'm sure you visit too. I recommend the garlic calamari. Darwin has a flourishing food truck scene - check out wearelocals.com.au for lots of foodie advice!

Only in Darwin

Darwin's first and best craft brewery, owned and operated by local blokes who love beer! Open Thurs/Fri 4:30 til late and Saturday 12noon til late, catch an Uber so no one has to drive home!! They have a range of beer, cider, ginger beer and (my personal favourite) alcoholic pink lemonade, all made on site! Pizza truck onsite whenever they are open (I recommend the BBQ chicken!). What beats beer and pizza?? Brewery tours by appointment only. PS - I am totally biased - ask for Stuart at the bar and tell him I said hi - that's my partner :)

Darwin loves a market, and this one is about a 15minute walk away! Saturday mornings the Parap Village shops (worth a visit anyway) become a bustling market with fresh fruit and veg, delicious food options with a strong Asian influence - yes the famous Mary's Laksa is here, but there is plenty of other options too. Local crafts, homewares and clothing or you can even get a massage! Coffee and cold drinks, flowers and plants, or just go and people watch! This is a favourite with locals as well as visitors! If you aren't keen on the walk, be warned the parking is a challenge and you will likely have to walk at least a block, unless you get lucky and nab a 'rockstar park'!

Most visitors to Darwin will have heard of the Mindil Beach Markets. A must-see at least once in your life, and going in time for Sunset (when it's the busiest) is the whole point. It will be busy so be prepared for a crush of a crowd strolling through the mostly food stalls (with a few craft and souvenir options too) deciding what to have for dinner, then a big shift as everyone heads out onto the beach to watch the famous sunset. (I recommend googling the time sun will set - it's earlier than you might expect when it feels like summer!) It's worth getting there early enough to have lots of browsing time for dinner before staking out a sunset viewing spot and waiting for the magic. If you are lucky enough to be there for a low-tide sunset there is more room to spread out. A tip from a local - stay another half hour after the sun sets, the magic will continue!!

East Point Reserve (which everyone just calls "East Point") is at your doorstep. From the shops you can see the water, and the footpath outside the Cool Spot will lead you right there! If you are up for some exercise, East Point is THE place to run, walk and ride your bike, with paths of up to 7km loop from the unit. If you don't want to go that far, the Fannie Bay 'beach' (rocky cliffs, mostly!) is only a few hundred meters from the door, and you can stroll as far as you like or just enjoy sunset and come back again! Not far after you enter East Point from Fannie Bay (about 2km from the unit) there are free BBQs and playgrounds and exercise equipment if you are so inclined!

Within the East Point Reserve is the Darwin Military Museum. This family-friendly museum highlights Darwin's role in WW2, but also pays tribute to a number of military engagements Australian service men and women have been involved in.

Coffee recommendations

Busy but worth it. Might not get a table during peak times (weekend mornings or before work week days), but take away is available. Can phone ahead and pick up a takeaway coffee order to get your day of sightseeing underway!

Locally owned and run, great coffee with a variety of beans and blends to choose from. You can also buy beans or fresh-ground to take away, as well as coffee and tea paraphernalia. If you forgot to bring your keep cup this is the place to go!!

Not much parking here, but if you are on your way in or out of the city and need a coffee or a bite, this is a good option. A bit on the trendy side for some, but delicious nonetheless!
