Coffee and cheer

A short walk from Riverwalk Cottage there a a number of interesting shops and cafes. Article Cafe at 25 Drews Ave stands out. The vibe is unique and warm. Great coffee and snacks, art, retro clothing and stuff. Just seems to be a place to be, to chill, meet. Highly recommend a visit. The coffee is really good. I'm enjoying it. Roasted by Devils Cup in Patea (who'd have thought) Open Wednesday to Saturday 8.30am to 3.00pm.

Food scene

Great dining of the wholesome pub dining style. Open breakfast through dinner. Especially recommend for dinner. A menu that covers beef, lamb, chicken, fish and vegetarian. Prices are reasonable. A relaxed dining experience in a lovely historic building located in the most beautiful street in NZ. 48 Ridgay St, just before Victoria Avenue. Stunning in spring when the cherry blossom is out. See my cover picture to this Guide. History of the relevance of the name Rutland to Whanganui: The Rutland Hotel was named after an English regiment who arrived in New Zealand in 1845. The fought Maori in Northland and Wellington before arriving in Wanganui in 1846. Their first task was to build the Rutland Stockade under the command of Sgt William Spiers-Russell. The stockade was located near the city’s present library. When the regiment was due to leave New Zealand in 1858 as many as 800 chose to stay in New Zealand, with many settling in Wanganui.
