The sugary mile that fringes Magens Bay, 3 miles north of Charlotte Amalie, makes almost every travel publication’s list of beautiful beaches. The seas here are calm, the bay broad and the surrounding green hills dramatic, and tourists mob the place to soak it all up. The beach has lifeguards, picnic tables, changing facilities, a taxi stand, food vendors, and water-sports operators renting kayaks, paddleboards and paddleboats (US$20 to US$30 per hour). A taxi from Charlotte Amalie costs US$10 per person. Parking costs US$2. Also, visitors to Magen's Bay beach usually drive right past the Udder Delite Dairy Bar (next to the St. Thomas Dairy) because of its nondescript appearance and blink-and-you'll miss it location on route 35. But if you find it, you'll be tickled by the liquor-spiked ice cream shakes in creative flavors such as Eskimo Sip and Jamocho.

On the north coast and just west of Magens Bay, Hull Bay is usually a gem of solitude when Magens is overrun. The shady strand lies at the base of a steep valley. It's a locals' beach: fishers anchor their small boats here and dogs lope around. When there's a northern swell, Hull Bay is also the best surf beach around. It's off the beaten path, so you’ll need a car to get here

Part of protected Smith Bay Park, this narrow strand off Smith Bay Rd is a beauty all right: calm, true-blue water laps the soft white sand, while several cays shimmer in the distance. Hollywood has filmed several commercials here. There's a lifeguard, picnic tables and a bathhouse with showers, but no other amenities. It's low-key and lovely for a swim. Parking costs US$2. The second-oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere (the oldest is on the island of Curaçao), peaceful St Thomas Synagogue is a National Historic Landmark. The current building dates from 1833, but Jews have worshipped here since 1796, from Sephardic Jews from Denmark to today’s 110-family Reform congregation. The temple floor is made of sand to symbolize the flight of the Israelites out of Egypt and across the desert. There’s a tiny museum in the back room.

Red-brick Fort Christian is the oldest Danish fortification in the Caribbean, dating to 1672. Over the years it has housed a jail, a governor’s residence and a Lutheran church. The fort underwent a US$4-million restoration between 2005 and 2017, but there's not a whole lot to show for it inside, save the four occasionally functioning iPad information panels. To make the fee worthwhile, join the curator's tour (10am daily, included with admission).

After your fair share of trips to the usual beaches, explore the hidden gem of Brewer’s Bay that is known as a haven for Green Sea Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles, and stingray communities. The calm, gentle waters are a little slice of paradise that is free from crowds of people and other snorkelers. Besides being an escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist beaches, Brewer’s Beach offers newbie snorkelers the chance to discover the ocean life without needing much experience. The sandy ocean grounds provide a gentle descent into deeper waters, where you can swim alongside tropical fish and local sea turtles. There are restroom facilities, and snack vans serving pates (meat-filled dough pockets) and cold Heineken beers. It gets deserted fast come nighttime. Brewers is by the airport.

Mountaintop is the highest point of St. Thomas, which means that you have the chance to experience panoramic views of the neighboring island of St. John and the British Virgin Island. Coupled with the incredible view is the island’s most spectacular cocktail bar that tells the story of the island. As it’s been told, in 1953 George Soule sailed to the paradise island of St. Thomas with the quest of finding the perfect island beverage. And he did just that. By pairing Cruzan Rum, local sugar cane extract, and ripe bananas, with a splash of fresh lime juice and secret banana liquor, he created the most cherished drink on the island. The banana daiquiri. Sometimes called the ‘Fourth Virgin,’ Water Island floats spitting distance from Charlotte Amalie. But with only about 200 residents and very few cars or shops, it feels far more remote. Honeymoon Beach offers fine swimming and snorkeling – it’s a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock. A couple of food stands sell drinks, sandwiches and fish tacos. Get here via the ferry that departs roughly every hour from outside Tickle’s Dockside Pub at Crown Bay Marina.

ONE OF THE HIGHEST-RATED, MOST beloved restaurants in the U.S. Virgin Islands has no official address and is best accessed by chartered boat, dinghy, or swimming. The floating pizzeria, called Pizza Pi, is the Caribbean’s only “food truck boat,” specially fitted with a commercial kitchen that cranks out New York–style pizzas. The restaurant takes orders by boat radio, phone, or email, but collecting your pie is a little harder, as the restaurant anchors in Christmas Cove, located off the east end of St. Thomas. The restaurant also offers delivery with their dinghy, which doubles as a small dining area when the occasional swimmer arrives. Know Before You Go The boat is typically anchored in Christmas Cove off the east side of St. Thomas. It's open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Look for a boat tour that stops at Pizza Pi.

Mermaid’s Chair is one of the best-kept secrets is that it’s hard to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for. During low tide, on the western side of the island, a unique strip of double beach creates a divide between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. To get the strip, you’ll need to park your vehicle at the Preserve at Botany Bay, and journey by foot to the beach. Be prepared for a 1.45-mile walk, which can be quite challenging at times.

Day trips from St. Thomas cruise terminal mean hopping on a boat and cruising to one of the neighboring islands, like St. John or the British Virgin Islands. The journey to the islands is half of the fun, as you sail along the waters, stop for snorkels, and feast on a delectable meal onboard. Depending on your preference and budget, you have many options for getting from one island to the next. A Passenger Ferry runs from St. Thomas to St. John and is your cheapest option. Alternatively, hop on a private water taxi and cater the trip towards your liking. You can also consider chartering a private boat to take you to the island. This can either be a sailing boat or speed boat, it all comes down to the kind of adventure you plan on having. High-speed trips or luxury cruising? Another great option for those who are renting a car is to take the Car Barge. Then you can easily zip around the islands and explore them according to your own whims.

Shopping

And shoppers on Main Street in Charlotte Amalie often wander right past the Camille Pissarro Gallery - the museum highlighting one of St. Thomas's most famous sons. The Impressionist master may have gained fame in Paris, but he was born right in the building housing the gallery.

CUSTOMS & CULTURE

GREETINGS The USVI has a welcoming culture. A warm greeting will go a long way. Please make sure to greet whomever you are about to speak with a "Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening" before you make your request or statement and "Thank You." LEFT SIDE In the USVI, motorists drive on the left side of the road. Wear a band on your wrist to remind you if you need to! CARNIVAL The USVI has three unique and beautiful carnival celebrations. One for every island! St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix.

REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN

Please visit savethereef.org for more information. Some sunscreens contain ingredients that are harmful to reefs, but you can minimize your environmental impact by choosing your products with intention. Chemical sunscreen contains a chemical called oxybenzone that absorbs UV. When that chemical gets in the water, it causes the coral to bleach at a lower water temperature, which means it bleaches quicker and easier. It reduces the growth rate and reproductive capacity. Oxybenzone can also damage the DNA of coral. Look for mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
