It is known to members of Westminster School as Green, and referred to without an article. It is a large gated quadrangle, closed to public traffic, surrounding a green upon which Westminster School pupils have legal rights to play football (they have some claim to have invented the modern game). The Church of St Dunstan was originally built around 1100 and is a Grade I listed building. A new south aisle was added in 1391 and was repaired in 1631. It was severely damaged in 1666 by the Great Fire of London. Rather than being completely built it was patched up. A steeple and tower was added in 1695-1701 by Sir Christopher Wren. The Church was again severely damaged in the Blitz of 1941. Wren's tower and steeple survived the bombing. During the re-organisation of the Anglican Church after World war II it was decided not to rebuild St Dunstan’s. In 1967 the City of London decided to turn the remains into a public garden, which opened in 1970.

In the swinging '60s, when Townshend needed a paisley shirt, John Lennon a Nehru jacket, or Twiggy a miniskirt, they came here-Where those Mod fashions were invented. Today there's not a hint of hippie. For the most part, Carnaby Street looks like everything else does from the '60s now - sanitized and co-opted by upscale franchises. At least at the upper end of the street retains a whiff of funkiness.

You're in the heart of London's shopping neighbourhood. This intersection also marks a sort of class divide among London shoppers. (A couple of blocks to the north is the mid-range shopping area Oxford St, which is lined with less-distinguished chains and department stores and seems scruffier than Regent Street) Regent Street with London's high-class, top-dollar shopping outlets. This street has wide sidewalks, fine architecture and royal-family connections. Most of the shops call the Queen their landlord, as she owns most of the land here.

A statue of Beau Brumell, the ultimate dandy meets you as if to say “Within a block in either direction are numerous gentleman’s shirt makers and many other delightful small shops” Stand by the statue and survey your menswear shopping options. (All to the right) Bates Hats still sells bowlers and top hats, as it has for a century. Turnball & Asser has dressed Winston Churchill, Prince Charles and James Bond with its “Bespoke” (custom-made) shirts and suits. John Lobb has sold boots to Prince’s William and Harry. Trickers has been making shoes for gentlemen since the days of Beau Brummel . It was Brummel (1778-1840) who popularized the understated jacket-trousers-and-tie ensemble.

Though it’s a stone’s throw from Brick Lane and peak hipsterdom, Whitechapel Market hasn’t been grabbed by the tentacles of gentrification yet. It’s a place where you’ll hunt for bargains under striped awnings and pick up cheap ingredients for curries and stews from traders serving the large local British Bangladeshi community. Jewellery, general knick-knacks and electrical goods are also on offer. If you’re feeling charming, you might like to try some light haggling.
