Food

The best food is cooked at home on the BBQ with friends I reckon, but there are some good takeaway places if you need a night off.
Great oysters. Sit outside and eat at rustic tables beside the River or takeaway. If you have a boat you can zip over here with a cheeky Pinot Grigio on board and make a picnic of it.

Parks & Nature

Culburra and its surrounds boast some of the most beautiful beaches, waterways and lakes in Australia. It never ceases to amaze me that we are within hours of the largest city in Australia and yet we have so much pristine nature to enjoy. Some of these places are hidden away so local knowledge is the best way to find them.
A very short 2 minute bush trail takes you to the lookout where you can get the best view of migrating humpback whales from August to October. Its a great spot to take in the Warrain Beach side of Culburra and get your bearings.

Currarong is a 25 minute drive away and a great place for a day trip. Its a beautiful sheltered beach with a kids playground, a sea pool, a boat ramp and a great fish and chip shop. Walk or drive around to the best swimming spot in Currarong - Abraham Bosoms Beach. Fringed by rocks, with soft white sand and gentle waves in the shallows, its an absolute stunner! There are also bushwalking trails here if you feel like a hike. And an absolute must swim beach is Abraham Bosoms Beach - safe, shallow, clear water.

This fabulous swimming and kayaking spot in Jervis Bay is perfect for a picnic. 15 minutes from Culburra, you need to drive out to the Beecroft Peninsular through the State Park gates - check opening times as its usually only weekends - then follow the signs to Honeymoon Bay. There are two beaches here and both are gorgeous. Honeymoon Bay is the more sheltered beach on the south side and partially enclosed by rocks. You can float on your back in the water here forever. Fringed by gum trees, there's plenty of shade to go around. Its hard not to fall asleep on warm days. Bindijine Beach is on the northern side of Honeymoon Bay and has a jetty at the end of the beach. White sandy beach backing onto bushland, this is always less populated and feels like a little patch of paradise in Jervis Bay.

Beautiful swimming beaches, white sands, clear turquoise water, boating, fishing and whale watching... this is what the Jervis Bay area is famous for. Visit the neighbouring towns of Callala, Huskisson and Vincentia located right on the bay. There are loads of shops, pubs and restaurants and even a cute deco cinema. These towns can get busy with tourists on weekends so out of season and weekdays are reccomended - unless you feel like dipping into the hustle bustle for while.

Tilbury Cove is at the Penguin Point end of Culburra. The perfect swimming spot for the kids or a place to retreat to if its windy on Culburra Beach. A 3 minute drive from the house, just head out along Penguin Point Road and park in the car park above the beach. You wont see the beach from the road. You need to walk down a bush track and it will appear around the corner. My favourite swimming place summer and winter, there's a grassy area to sit on and one picnic table.

The Crookhaven River is a 2 minute walk from Burra Breeze. Its a tidal river so it can be full and calm on some days, choppy on others and you can walk out on it at low tide. Its a great spot for kayaking at high tide. It backs onto mangroves and bush so there are often sandflies which have a very nasty bite so make sure you carry the insect repellent. I speak from experience! The mountain you can see in the distant background is Mt Cullunghutti which rises 300 metres above sea level and is recognized as a place of Aboriginal significance.

This extraordinary lake on the south side of Culburra is a sanctuary and home to the local bird life as well as to rare species of migratory birds that are not often seen elsewhere . Drive down The Lake Circuit to the park and playground area. From here, its a very short walk down a sandy track to the lake, the sand bar and Warrain Beach. This is the best spot for bird watching in the area. In summer, there are Little Terns nesting around the lake and if you have a kayak, you can quietly paddle out and sit among the birds. One of my favourite places to spend quiet time. During heavy weather, the sandbar opens up to the ocean - usually every few years.

Warrain Beach is on the southern side of Penguin Point Rd. Its the main surf beach in Culburra and the waves here are awesome. Culburra Beach has raised some of Australia's finest surfing champions including the amazing Wright family. 2021 Women's Surfing World Champion Tyler Wright grew up on these waves before becoming the first female surfer to conquer the infamous Pipeline in Hawaii.

This is the fastest and most scenic way to get over to Huskisson - a bustling holiday town in the heart of Jervis Bay. Leaving from Myola, a 10 minute boat ride across the estuary saves you a 45 minute drive around. Lots of good eating, shopping and a big pub with beer garden - if you are happy to queue up. Huskisson goes off with a bang at Christmas holiday time with fireworks, a vintage cinema and a funfair. And you can leave the crowds behind when you hop back on the unique Husky Ferry to return to the peace and quiet of Culburra.
