Natural treasures

Our favourite Golden Bay beaches, walks and landscapes.
Ligar Bay is a quieter beach with golden sands and a low-key vibe. Tidal, great for walking at low tide or a quick dip at high tide.

The northern end of the stunning Abel Tasman National Park. Great for coastal bush walks, water taxis into the park or a picnic. The campground is busy over high season, but Totaranui is well worth a visit.

The track to Wharariki Beach travels over farm paddocks and through a section of coastal forest, before arriving a the beautiful windswept coast. The best time to visit is at low tide, when you can walk the length of the beach and take in spectacular coastlines, caverns, islands, and enormous sand dunes along the way. Source: DOC Sometimes baby seals are swimming near the rocks. Please keep your distance while viewing their wonderful antics.

A walk that starts off gentle alongside the river but then becomes a clamber up a goat track as the path climbs. Tough in places but worth it.

Salisbury Falls, Bainham, is very picturesque and has great swimming holes. Near the historic Langford Store, Bainham. Apparently, also featured in Peter Jackson’s famous trilogies, and is the film site where Tauriel and Legolas meet before heading into Lake-town in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Named after the Salisbury family who were attracted to the area during the gold rush of 1860, these beautiful waterfalls can be found in the Aorere River in Golden Bay. During summer, you’ll often find people swimming at the base of the waterfall, or sunbathing on the rocks above. How to get there: Salisbury Falls is located 30 minutes from the Collingwood township, on the way toward the Heaphy Track. Parking is available on the side of road and a short 5 minute walk will take you to the river. Source: Nelson Tasman NZ Site

The Langford Store is nestled in the heart of the Aorere valley, 15 minutes inland from Collingwood on the way to the Heaphy track. This general store and post office has been providing essentials to the Bainham community and travellers since 1928. Enjoy a pot of tea or an espresso coffee, served with sublime sweet treats. Soak up the sunshine and the tranquility of the surrounding scenery, while you write a postcard home or just rest a moment with friends. Source: Langford Store site. Lots of quirky old treasures from eras gone by here. Near Salisbury Falls - makes a great low-key day out when combined with the falls, and one of the cafes at Collongwood or the Mussel Inn.
