Istanbul is full of surprises, which you’re likely to stumble upon around every corner. It’s rich and complex history has left traces on its surface, that each reveal a little more of its past. Or that’s how it feels, at least, when you enter the gardens of the Crimean Memorial Church, in Galata. The Crimea Memorial Church, also known as Christ Church, is a Church of England church in the Beyoglu - Taksim district of Istanbul, Turkey.

It is nice to walk down Gallipdede alley with its stores and bars/restaurants, some of them offering their guests roof terraces with a great view of Istanbul. In their immediate neighborhood you can discover walls covered with colorful and meaningful street art. This shows that Istanbul is very much alive behind the centers of tourism. Just great!

The founder of the 'Ara Cafe' is none other than Ara Güler himself. In his restaurant you can eat very well a la carte, with regularly changing dishes. For the kitchen of this à la carte restaurant, this means more work and greater uncertainty in planning, because à la carte dishes have to be cooked and prepared in small quantities à la minute, i.e. at the same time on time for serving, and much more ingredients have to be provided for this than is the case, for example, when only a few unchanging menus are offered. It is especially pleasing that you can also order vegan food at Cafe Ara. The staff is responsive to your wishes and that is really something special. If you are going out to dinner, I recommend that you reserve a table in advance. The restaurant is very popular in the inner seating area, not only because the food is prepared here in the highest quality but also because of the charming vintage interior and all the authentic photos that Ara Güler took. To his photos: Ara Güler photographed not only the daily hustle and bustle of this wonderful city but also people like Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, Bertrand Russell, Maria Callas, Alfred Hitchcock, Salvador Dalí and Picasso. What I regret is that there are no photographs of e.g. Dali in the restaurant. If you like good food in a dignified atmosphere, you will love the 'Ara Cafe'!

The Guardian Newspaper, which compiles the top 10 Gar restaurants in Europe, took the Orient Express, which has been serving in Sirkeci Gari since 1890, in the 7th place. The newspaper portrayed the Orient Express as a “calm paradise in a curcunic station.” The Orient Express Restaurant employs competent chefs who can prepare (absolutely delicious!) vegan main dishes for you. The vegan dishes are not on the menu but you can get them, thanks to a female regular guest from Europe - since the opening of this restaurant she has made the chefs extremely well accustomed to vegan food. That's why I give you the tip: Do not use the word "vegan". Just say that you don't want to have anything of animals in your food - the staff will be fine with that. When you go out to dinner in the evening, you should reserve a table. During the day this is not necessary, you always get a seat.
