The FarmHouse Inn and Kitchen, Whitefish. Locally owned slightly off the beaten path of Downtown. This is a go-to for a great lunch (...always fresh made bread and ingredients). We love their sandwiches. Small place, currently doing breakfast, lunch and dinner. Limited indoor seating. Some outdoor seating in front and more in back with a few more covered options. Farm to table style cafe menu that features ingredients from local farms, including their own family farm in Whitefish. They offer organic and gluten free options, fresh juices, and specialty drinks. Call if you are thinking dinner.

World Spice Merchants - Montana (62 Arcadia Way, Columbia Falls, MT 59912) Just north of Glacier International Airport. The World Spice Merchants, a Seattle institution known for its Pike Place location and commitment to quality, has opened a Montana outpost. While the Columbia Falls warehouse isn’t a retail store, there is a little area to buy the pre-made gift boxes and packages of spices. Custom orders must be made online (www.worldspice.com.), and local customers can pick them up at the warehouse. Having more than 200 types of fresh spices available so close is a magnet for locals and tourists in the know.

City/town information

Columbia Falls should not be overlooked. Basically, what Whitefish was 20 years ago. Very much more ‘local Montana’. They call this town of nearly 5,000 the “Gateway to Glacier” for a reason. To the east, U.S. Highway 2 takes travelers to West Glacier and the park’s popular west entrance. To the north, the North Fork Road takes visitors to exotic destinations like Bowman Lake and Polebridge. Because of its location, Columbia Falls is the perfect spot to unwind following a trek into Glacier National Park. Columbia Falls Farmers’ Market on Thursday evenings in the spring and summer. Columbia Falls gears up for its annual Heritage Days celebration in late July.

Head south to Bigfork and the east shore of Flathead Lake for an afternoon searching through lots of eclectic shops then have lunch or even dinner. Bigfork is a quaint town with beautiful scenery, sleepy in winter, but comes alive in the summer. 4,200 people call Bigfork home. Bigfork and the surrounding communities have a few great fine dining options and local bars. One is ShowThyme Act II on Electric Avenue (downtown). The menu includes fish, pasta and wild game.

Kalispell, the biggest town in the Flathead valley with about 30,000 folks. On the north side of town you have all the big name box stores and fast food type places. Downtown has something afoot these last few years. It can provide a cold drink and a good meal, otherwise known as the perfect evening out. A working town feel for sure. A GREAT sushi place called Blue Samurai, an Irish pub; Brannigan’s Irish Pub with good handcrafted beef pasties and of course several local brew pubs. Plus, lots of other local dinning choices. Finally, head to the north end of downtown to Moose’s Saloon. This is a local institution and a must see if in the area, famous for its pizza, and you’re sure to run into people from every walk of life. It’s a perfect spot to call it a night.

Eureka offers a charming main street, but don't blink because you might miss it. Great small-town hospitality. If going to the Ten Lakes Scenic Area which has miles of hiking trails, fishing streams and campsites you might think about stopping there. Eureka is just north about 15 minutes. Also it’s along HWY 93 and the last stop before the U.S./Canada border crossing at the 24-hour Port of Roosville.

Bring your passport! There is so much just over the border. Fernie is a great day trip and a very beautiful alpine town tucked into the mountains! Lots of cools shops and lunch/dinner places. About a 2 hour drive. The Canadian Rockies, wow. You must Google the Icefields Parkway, Canada…double WOW. One of the top five drives in the world, no joking, but not a day trip. You would need three nights and during summers the Icefield drive is packed with slow moving cars and RVs because of all the scenery and wild life. Going into Canada their custom takes typically about 5-10 minutes, hey it's Canada, very chill. Plan for 30-45 minutes when coming back into the U.S. of A for customs, sorry.

A inviting downtown? breathtaking scenery? Attractions for every season? Check, check, and check. As the gateway to both Glacier National Park and Whitefish Mountain ski resort there are tons of things to do in Whitefish. The town at about 7,200 folks has more than its share of great things to do. Perhaps begin your day with a great breakfast at any number of amazing places to eat. Then take in downtown. Although it is not very big, it is easily one of the top things to do. So take some time to wander through to check out the galleries or browse in the many shops. The downtown extends south and west from the charming Amtrak station. Any good list of things to do in Whitefish has to include spending time at its charming lake or visiting the ski resort. The water’s clear, the air is fresh, and there’s even a beach. And being that this is Western Montana, it’s surrounded by mountains, so it’s gorgeous. The ski resort has all manner of things to do from mountain biking, hiking, and an aerial park in summer to excellent skiing in the winter. Finally, you will have a whole lot of options for a delicious dinner and perhaps some live music.

Consejos para la ciudad

Stopping to get supplies or a bite to eat in Whitefish

There are two main grocery stores as you enter Whitefish from the south along HWY 93, the airport or Kalispell; - Super 1 - Safeway You cannot miss them. Coming from the south on HWY 93, Super 1 is the first you come upon, next is the Safeway just a a little further down the road and on the left. There are also two small Bodegas style places; - Alpine village (721 Wisconsin Ave, Whitefish) - Markus's (9 Baker Ave, Whitefish) Both are good for sandwiches for the trail or slopes and beer & wine for later. Alpine Village has great cheeses.

Breakfast, get there early. Expect some waiting after 8 am

Most breakfast places open up early (7 AM) during the summer months. In Whitefish one can expect a 10-20 wait during main breakfast times, it is a first come first served.

Dinner in Whitefish, lots of good choices, but call ahead

During the summer and winter months. One should really call head to make reservations. That day or even a day or two before. For groups a few days in advance is a must. You can try to walk-in, but expect longer waits for the most popular places that are in downtown Whitefish. Explore north towards the Ski hill, on Wisconsin Ave and find more excellent choices. Shoulder season seems to be getting shorter and shorter: April, May, mid September, October and November are the slow months then places are walk-in and when the local come back into town.

Two main ones are: Remington Bar - Downtown Whitefish Great Northern Bar & Grill - Downtown Whitefish They both have great websites with calendars for events. They also serve food. Live music throughout the week. Some of the bigger name groups charge covers. There are several more small places that also have live music but I'll let you explore to find those places.

Lots to explore in downtown Whitefish

The night life can get a little crazy in the summer in downtown on Fridays and Saturdays. In winter... its a Ski town, so same goes; perhaps a little more crazy. Friday and Saturday nights during X-mas and New Years or during Winter carnival in early February are crazy.

A few Local slang words/phrases

Fish = Whitefish, MT C-Falls = Columbia Falls, MT Graupel = Soft hail or snow pellets. The term graupel also comes from the German language. Rocky Mountain Oysters = Bull testicles that are sliced, deep fried, and eaten. Not as fancy as you thought, huh? Driving = Trips measured in hours spent on uncrowded roadways traveling much faster than one should between two towns. Yes, really too fast at times. Neighbors = Those living in the home closest to someone, often several miles away. ;-)

Polebridge, Montana. West side of Glacier National Park (NP)

Polebridge is a very, very small off-grid town. Two miles from the is the Polebridge/North Fork Ranger Station (RS). Its has a really cool mercantile store. Huckleberry Bear Claws are a local favorite, but are expensive ($6), but I think they are a must try & worth it. Plus, remember its in the middle of nowhere. In Winter about 8 full time residents. Also the only way to get to Kintla & Bowman Lakes (wow) within the Park. This is less busy side of the Park. Great views or the Rockies, especially in the Fall. About a 45-50 minute drive north from Columbia Falls. Worth the drive.

Two local new sources with great info on the valley.

A free weekly newspaper called the Flathead Beacon “https://flatheadbeacon.com”. It comes out every Wednesday and can be found throughout the Valley in restaurants, groceries store, cafes, etc. or online. It provides some local color and is a good source for local ‘going-ons’ in the valley and things to do. Another great source that covers the valley is Flathead Living “https://flatheadliving.com/“.
