This is just across Hemlock (the main road that parallels Highway 101 and takes you North into town) and North of the Tolovana State Park parking area. It's a classic pub, with pool, darts, good-for-greasy food and friendly locals. The Warren family were the most prosperous of the early homesteaders. Weds-Mon, 12-8. 503.436.1130.

With a welcoming space, whiskey bar and friendly service, the Wayfarer is a great spot to warm up after a cool walk up the beach. It's just past Haystack Rock, so 1.1mi from the house. Turn up where you see a small dune and the Ecola Inn, skip over the sandy creek and up the paved rise, on the right. This also puts you in Mid-Town (the house is in “South Town” or "Tolovana" and the most business is in "Downtown" or “North Town”). They take reservations by phone at 503.436.1108 and offer a great view of Haystack Rock from their window seating areas.

Our favorite place to eat in Cannon Beach is located in Downtown, just East of the popular beach view and access point on 2nd St. It's a family business with a focus on fresh seafood meals from sandwiches and baskets, to our favorites, the locally caught crab cakes, steamer clams or grilled or blackened halibut or salmon served with chowder, slaw or garlic bread. Ideal for lunch or to take home to enjoy on the balcony at sunset with a bottle of white. 503.436.9130

The coffee is good, but the breads, pastries and savory items are the best. Long lines in the classic morning hours, but catch it early morning or for an afternoon snack and it's super. Nice indoor seating, though small. Daily, 7-4. 503.436.4254

The icon of the Oregon coast, the 235' Haystack Rock and it's 2 Needles at Cannon Beach is a beautiful scene to take in at most any time. It is a 1mi walk to the North from the house which can be enjoyed no matter the tide. At low tide, you can walk right up to it and find colorful sea stars and other fascinating tidepool creatures in its intertidal area. It's part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and hosts many types of seabirds from the common Loon to Tufted Puffins from April through July.

To the South of Hug Point, just over a 2mi walk on the beach from the house is Arcadia Beach. It's just accessible on the beach at low tide, so plan ahead. But it's very much worth the wait. With its main stack Lion Rock and colorful, history-revealing sandy cliffs, Arcadia is a popular destination, but with a full mile of beach to have space to yourself and enjoy it's unique views. Check the tides at https://www.cannonbeach.org/things-to-do/beaches-and-parks/tide-charts/

Looking for a way to enjoy the town that's unique? Just south of the Ecola Creek Bridge at the far North end of town, this trail follows a bend of Ecola Creek, past wetlands and emerging at 2nd Street at the City Park. A gravel portion of the trail circles the ponds at the east end of 2nd Street and a south spur of the trail passes through a Spruce forest reserve. When the trail emerges from the forest reserve to the south, walkers can continue through a quiet neighborhood along South Elm Street and the trail continues where the road dead-ends, passing through woodlands and wetlands before emerging on East Gower Avenue near City Hall where a paved portion of the trail continues south, emerging on Spruce Street. By continuing to walk south on Spruce Street, walkers can connect to the Haystack Hill Trail at the end of Spruce Street.

This beautiful stack and it's adjacent cliffside rock formations are as much or more of a delight than even the taller Haystack Rock. It's just a 1mi walk on the beach to visit. Go at low tide (check them easy at https://www.cannonbeach.org/things-to-do/beaches-and-parks/tide-charts/) for a view of the hole in the lower right of the rock. There is good tide pool viewing around the many rocks that front Silver Point at that time as well.

Take in this State Park for an afternoon walk to take in this unique viewpoint at the North end of town. The bike to Indian Beach to the North is excellent and a bit challenging. Or drive there as well past Ecola.

Just across Hemlock, NE from the house just happens to be a fantastic grocery store, market, and the largest selection of fine wine on the Oregon Coast. We love being so close to a spot with high quality food, with local fresh goods daily and wines from the far flung reaches that you just wouldn't expect to find in humble Cannon Beach. Daily, 8-9. Known locally as the Screw & Brew, it's as much of a hardware store as you'd expect to find in quaint Cannon Beach, but with the added benefit of also being a small pub. A locals favorite, and a great spot to stop for lunch or a drink in Midtown. Great people and one of our favorites. Daily, 10-8. 503.436.4086.

Places to Skip

Not necessarily our favorite, but you're sure to be curious. This is a lively, raucous spot to gather and enjoy great beer. It's often busy, so try in the off-peak hours. More expensive than it needs to be, but it's one of the finer 'eat at a brewery' spots if one can think of it that way. 503.908.3377

Consejos para la ciudad

Facilidad para moverse por la casa

Use the bus when you can't walk the beach.

Note that it runs just Saturday & Sunday. The NW Connector Bus Line, #21 from Seaside to Cannon Beach has a stop on Hemlock (the main street) just North of the Tolovana Inn (North of the house). Time it right and it's a great way to get into Mid or Downtown Cannon Beach. It's just $1 to ride. Schedule is online at https://bit.ly/cannon-bus
Formas de ahorrar

Happy hours are a way to beat the crowds and save.

The Wayfarer has happy hour in the bar. Great by the fireplace too. The Driftwood has happy hour food and drinks from 4-6, M-F. Public Coast Brewery has happy hour from 4-6 with $1 off beer.
Qué debes empacar

Bring your favorite slippers.

Take your shoes off and enjoy your slippers for warm toes.

Have a fire on the sand after dark.

Come out to see the stars in-between the cloud banks. And with the Tolovana Inn just North of us, the shared feeling of warmth and that shared 'magic' that Cannon Beach has comes together with a socially-distanced fire on the beach.

Grill some fish from Fresh Foods on the back patio.

The back yard is set with pavers and is a great spot to spend an evening with a meal on the barbecue (be sure to turn on the gas (horizontal) behind the bbq first). There are utensils in the shed, as well as lounge chairs of a few types to sit and enjoy some private time. And we consider ourselves lucky when we are visited by the local "wild" rabbits, so be on the look out.
Facilidad para moverse por la casa

Rent bicycles for a day.

Family Fun Cycles is in Midtown and has a great selection of bicycles to choose from. Riding on the sand is fairly easy at low tide, and a great way to get in some exercise while seeing all town has to offer from the beach. It's a 3mi ride on the beach from the house to the Southern most rideable spot, Hug Point. And it's a 2mi ride on the beach to the North end of Downtown where Ecola Creek stops your progress. 503.436.2247. Note that it's easiest to enter and exit the beach with bicycles at the Tolovana State Park, just to the North of the house.
Facilidad para moverse por la casa

Beach access by the house is a rock-step down.

Most can navigate the rocks well enough. Though if your knees or agility are not what they used to be, walk across the lawn across the street and use the stairs down to the beach at the Tolovana Inn. Of if you have bicycles, ride them through the parking lot of the Tolovana Inn to the large, gravel beach access point on just the other side.
