Food Scene

It has a great selection of local Taiwanese street food that you can experience, e.g. smelly tofu, oyster omelette, pork bone soup, baked black pepper pork bun, the list goes on! Whenever I'm in the mood for street food, this is my go-to night market.

This is a great burger joint, and not just because its owners are also from New Zealand. :)

One of my favorite restaurants serving very fresh white pepper prawns (or shrimps, cooked in a pot with white pepper and rice wine). They have many different ways of serving this seafood. Definitely get the white pepper flavor, and if you like spicy food then also get the hot and sour flavor. It's where I tend to take my overseas guests and they all love it.

If you're a coffee connoisseur, then you have to try this little cafe called Fifteen Steps Workshop, an espresso lab that roasts their own beans. Not a lot of seats to hang out, however lots of single origin coffees and a passionate barista who knows what he's doing. One of my favorite secret spots, guaranteed to not disappoint. Coffee starts from TWD90 a cup and can go all the way up to 2-3 times more. This place is just a few minutes' walk from our property so if you want to buy whole beans from them and make your own coffee, we have a manual coffee grinder and filter or Bodum french press you can use.

This is a delightful patisserie that bakes on the premises and serves coffee as well. They use high quality ingredients to bake divine tarts and cheesecakes. Open from 12pm till 6pm everyday and is closed on Tuesday.

If you want to meet friends over tea/coffee or grab some pasta, steak, burger or dessert, this cafe called Let's Meet F2F is a great option. Modern decor with plenty of seating, you can easily spend a few hours just chilling out.

The biggest night market in Taipei area, with a good mix of shopping (shoes, hair accessories, souvenirs) and local street food. Very accessible via the MRT's Red Line. If you want to try out what I call the night market shuffle (shuffling along slowly in the crowd going from one end of the market to the other), then this is the place to go.

This is one of the best traditional Taiwanese breakfast shops, extremely popular. They are on the second floor of Hua Shan Market and the queue almost always is looonnngg, stretching all the way down to the ground floor and bends around the corner of the building. So, best to go really early e.g. 5:30am or an hour or so before they close. Don't go there expecting great service though, it's a production line. You line up, order when it's your turn, starting with what to drink (usually savor or sweet soy milk), followed by the food items you want, then you pay and grab the food to find a seat in the food court area. The food is freshly made right on site, you can see them preparing and cooking right there. Their thick Shao Bing (baked sesame bun) is my favorite, a mix of sweet & savory with a chewy bagel-like texture. I always get a fried dough in my Shao Bing, the combination of which is called Shao Bing You Tiao. Try that with a bowl of savory soy milk.
