Food Scene

The best tripe soup in town (ciorba de burta). Additionally, you can order small sausages with mustard (mici cu mustar) and a local bear. The staff doesn't speak English, the menu is in Romanian, the restaurant is a bit spooky, but I still recommended for great food and an authentic Romanian experience. All the other traditional Romanian restaurants are very touristy.

Sightseeing

The ensemble of the three main squares (Piata Mare, Piata Mica, Piata Huet) is the main hot spot of Sibiu's historic center. In the Large Square you have a Tourist Information center, the Catholic church which you can visit for free, the Brukenthal Museum where you can buy a day-ticket which includes all the other museum from the town.

Piata Mica (or the Lesser Square) is the former square of the merchants (you'll see that the houses have a portico at their ground floor). At an end of the square you'll find the Liar's Bridge, where it is said that if you say a lie while you're on the bridge, the other person will know. In the eastern corner of the square, pass under a medieval tower and go down towards the Goldsmith Square, in the lower part of the old town (more quiet, less touristy).

Piata Huet is the oldest square of Sibiu and the place where the Saxons first settled here during the Middle ages. This is the reason why the square has a circular form, because the houses were built on the ruins of the first fortifications of the town (you can still see a part of the oldest fortifications in the courtyard of Weinkeller Restaurant, in the southern part of the square, entrance under an arch). Visit the Evangelic cathedral and don't forget to climb up the bell tower from where you have panoramic views of the historic center.

Strada Cetatii is known as the most beautiful street of Sibiu. The landlord of Pardon Cafe has even written this at the corner of the street. You will walk along the fortifications of the Upper Town. Go and look at Sala Thalia from the main street and you'll better understand the old defense system.

The Asylum Church is the oldest church of Sibiu (it was built even before the big Evangelic church). It is an Orthodox church now and you can visit it inside. Here it was the first hospital of Transilvania as well as of Romania. The buildings surrounding the church have kept their original function and accommodate elder people (it is still an asylum nowadays). You can shoot good photos pf the Asylum Church from the courtyard of the Weinkeller Restaurant, which has access from the Huet Square.

Parks & Nature

Parcul Astra is the main green area from the historic center. It is a small park but at its western corner you can see (or even join!) the locals playing chess, cards, and all sorts of board games. Try it for a authentic experience.

Sub Arini means 'under the alders' in Romanian. It is the only big park of Sibiu but it is a good place where to have a stroll, cycle, go out with the children to play, or simply cross it if you go from the city center to the Dumbrava Forest (where the village museum is).

The Village Museum is one of the biggest ones of Romania (after Bucharest). It has traditional old houses from Sibiu County as well as a lake with boats and a stage. It is an open museum where you will walk along the alleys and among the traditional houses. You can visit the houses/household inside, so ask around for the house keeper if you find your favorite house closed.

Shopping

Nicolae Balcescu street is the main pedestrian street that links the ensemble of the old squares with the new part of the town. It takes 10-15 minutes to walk from an end of the street to another one. Zara has always good discounts and it's definitely cheaper than anywhere else. Galeriile Pacea is a multilevel store with Chinese products. Humanitas Bookstore has also guide and maps for Romania/Sibiu and downstairs you can have a tea/coffee while reading a book.

Everything Else

Gusterita is a Saxon village, now a neighborhood of Sibiu. You can visit the old Evangelic fortified church from the center and from there hike up along Strada Malinului towards the metal cross that stands uphill. Ignore the dogs barking at you (they are nice and friendly when you talk with them) and continue uphill a dirt road that slightly turns right toward a panoramic point of Sibiu and Fagarasi Mountains. From the lookout you can come back along the same way or complete a loop , passing through a small village down the valley (but it's too complicated to explain the hike here).
