Barton On Sea is just inside Hampshire at the border with Dorset. The next village is Highcliffe and not far from the village, on the road to Christchurch, is Highcliffe Castle. Quite an interesting history, once belonged to the Selfridge family of Oxford Street dept store fame. It’s actually ‘artificial’ in a way as it’s made up of parts of medieval castles shipped to the beach below from France. There’s a ‘zig-zag’ path down the cliff to a lovely beach.

Just beyond Milford is Keyhaven, a quiet, pretty, small village with The Gun pub for good food. There’s a 5 mile walk along the coast to Lymington, bird watchers will enjoy. The Isle of Wight seems close enough to touch!

Hurst castle was built by Henry the 8th and is at the end of a 1.5 mile shingle spit. It can be a tiring walk but you can get a boat back - check timings!

Lymington is a posh, yachty, Georgian market town and harbour. The High Street is a steep hill with views of the Forest beyond. The High Street leads you down to an old winding cobbled street to the quayside. Here the fishing boats unload their catch by The Ship Inn. There's an assortment of interesting little shops and food to be had. You can sit on a bench at the quayside, watch the boats go in and out and have seagulls steal your chips!
