Our favourite bars and restaurants

Excellent, family owned traditional restaurant. Can be quite crowded but you can always have a drink at the bar while waiting for a table. Usually the father operates the bar while the children (of which one of the sons looks like George Michael) wait the tables.

Cozy bar at the beginning of our street. The charming ladies working here serve delicious nibbles and are always ready to mix you improvised cocktails or a refreshing gin and tonic.

Camp and colourful, this bar is an extravagant mix between La Cage aux Folles and 'Allo 'Allo! Don't miss the "spectacle" on Sundays when all the regulars come to enjoy a French chanson performance in drag.

When in Nice, you have to try the mediterranean speciality socca! Similar to a crêpe, but made with chickpea flour, the savory treat is by tradition eaten with only olive oil and maybe, som black pepper. Enjoy it as a quick snack with a glas of table wine. If Chez Rene is closed or full, Lou Phila Leva is just as good.

At Paneolio they probably serve the best al taglio pizza outside of Italy! At least the best in Nice. AND it's cheap! The staff is super attentive and friendly, and if your French is rusty, you can order in Italian. Share a couple of squares under the olive tree on the patio overlooking the Promenade du Paillon, and you're in an Italian food heaven.

Wide and excellent array of traditional and also a few more experimental crêpes and galettes. It’s tucked away in a small square one block from one of the touristic pedestrian streets, and therefore much calmer than its neighbours. Try the cider that is served in white ceramic mugs, and if you want to be over the top à la Côte d’Azur, try the galette that is topped with scallops AND foie gras!

This brasserie is not located in the typical touristic part of Nice, but it’s well worth the 15 min walk from Place Massena. They menu is short but well composed and they always serve good (and cheap!) oysters and shellfish.

There's a farmer's market with local produce like olives and flowers on Cours Saleya, Tuesday to Sunday from 6 a.m. Don't miss the fresh fruit and vegetables, or the artisinal socca. Starting at dusk on Monday mornings, you can enjoy a French favorite past time, and find antiques and vintage bags and clothing at the Marché aux Puces! One early morning we found a vintage Louis Vuitton carry-all for only 40 €!

The street is lined with antique dealers with everything from ancient roman sculptures to mid century modern design. Make sure you don't miss Holger Bruckert's boutique at 34 Rue Catherine. This is surely where Elton John shops when in Nice.

Our favorite excursions and day trips

There's a beautiful spot to discover around every corner along la Côte d'Azure! These are just a few of the gems nestled along the scenic coastline.
Antibes is smaller than Nice, but well worth a visit. The harbour is bustling and good place to spot some of the bigger yauchts in the area. The small streets in the old town are full of picturesque restaurants and shops. Marché Provencal is a beautiful farmers market in the morning, and reinvented as a art gallery at night. The restaurant Le Zinc has excellent wine and snacks and is open during the afternoon hours and in the evening. Compagnie Des Glaces (15 Rue Georges Clemenceau) close to the Place de République, has the best ice cream in Antibes. This is one of the few places that serves french ice cream, which is creamier than the sweeter geleato, which is common in the region. Make sure you try the chestnut (marron) ice cream.

The mountain village Grasse is well-known for perfume production, but has a lot more to offer than sweet smells! Take the TER train from SNCF Gare de Nice and walk up the stairs to the 11th century cathedral at the top of the hill. Be sure to stay hydrated, the climb is fairly though. The vieux ville is both charming and beautiful, and sprayed with lavender or jasmine perfume. When you need to rest your legs, go to the big square in the centre, where you'll find plenty of patios and restaurants.

Don't miss the harbour in Nice! From Vieux Nice, you can either walk up to Place Garibaldi and take Rue Cassini down to Quai des Docks, or walk up the steps of Colline de Château (the Castle Hill). The hill offers a spectacular view, and a chance to see remains of the original city. There are plenty of restaurants and antique dealers in Le Port, and you can easily spend half a day in the stores. We recommend Les Puces de Nice, small dealers with different specialities.
