I have only taken classes with their teacher Tamarin, but she is amazing. Her slow, alignment-focused classes are good for beginners but also satisfying for advanced yoginis. 3 blocks from my place.

Food Scene

The BEST gumbo in town! They sometimes don't have it, though, so call to see if they have gumbo that day. Also they are a breakfast and lunch joint (only open morning and daytime).

This is the kind of coffee shop you go to for stimulating conversation with a stranger-turned-new-friend. No wifi! The owner Mo is awesome. The iced coffee is like crack and will have you bouncing.

DON'T GO HERE. I don't like them. The bartenders once drunkenly got into a fight with my visiting friends (because one of my friends was talking to a girl that the bartender liked) and it was not only a ridiculous, protracted brawl that spilled out into the street and had neighbors threatening to call the cops, but in the effort to keep the fight "going", one of the bartenders hit me after I had successfully quelled the fight, and the same bartender tried to smash my car window as I was leaving (note: I was not involved in the fight except to try to get it to stop). Those bartenders don't seem to be working there anymore, but I still will never go back there.

Shopping

Cuz there's always a reason to create a new costume in New Orleans, and a thrift store's a great place to go get it. That, and weather is so unpredictable here you might not have packed suitably...

Parks & Nature

Beautiful Audubon Park is just a 5-minute bike ride away. Not only does it have a lovely 1.8-mile walking/running/biking loop, but it also has a zoo, an insectarium and butterfly garden, and a big screen theater! Note: the location on this map is not the closest entrance from my home. From my home, enter the park from St. Charles Ave.
