Essentials

The Save Mart in Tahoe City is the closest grocery store. It is easy to find at the “Y” intersection in town. In a late-night pinch, the Kings Beach Safeway is a bit further, but it’s open 24 hours.

Food Scene

Down at the Highway 89 turnoff, the River Ranch has a classy restaurant and bar overlooking the river. We love to go sit by the fire and order off the bar menu. The Crest Café across the street is good for a quick or more casual bite.

The coffee and pastries at Tahoe House on the west side of the lake are awesome. When you get to the Y, take a right and go a little less than a mile. The line can be long on big weekends but the service is super speedy and friendly.

Entertainment & Activities

Alpine is our neighborhood ski resort, just a couple miles up the road. It has great terrain and no fuss. There is also a free ski shuttle that runs along Mineral Springs Street just down the hill during peak season, but you should call Alpine to make sure it is running. It will also take you to Squaw, where your lift tickets work as well.

Sightseeing

Downtown Truckee is its own little world, only 20 minutes away. There are cafés, galleries, boutiques, and chocolate and wine shops. Drive on Highway 89 away from the lake, and take a right on West River St. before you get all the way back to I-80.

Don't miss one of the most iconic views in Tahoe. Drive down the west side and check out the view of the bay from up top, then hike down a mile to the water.

Blackwood Canyon is a great, free place to hang out year-round. In summer, there's great hiking: try Eagle Rock (steep but short, up to a ledge that looks directly onto a lake) or Ellis Peak (super scenic!). In winter, there’s room to park at the base, and then dogs, sleds, snowshoes, cross-country skis and other methods of transportation are all welcome.
