Blue Grotto are a shaped rocks in the northern part of the island of Zakynthos. Of course the cave in general is practically around the perimeter of the island, especially in places where the cliffs fall into the sea simple. However, the most famous are the Blue Caves and Keri Caverns. To Grottos you can get only from the sea, so practically every village on Zakynthos (and local guides at each, even the smallest beach) offer a trip to the Blue Grotto. Often these trips are related to cruise to the Gulf of Navagio (Wreck Bay). Like the trip to Navagio, it is worth to go from the small ports on the northern part of the island (Agios Nikolaos, Skinari, 800m far away from our villa) due to the short distance to Grottos, sail small boats, which can literally enter the Grotto. Often in smaller caves these boats stop to be able to bathe inside the cave. It is quite an interesting experience - the water seems that it isn't like the one outside:-)

Alykes is a tourist town on the western coast, 15’ far away and It is very peculiar for the presence of salterns that supply salt to the entire island and from where the town derives its name (Alykes in Greek literally means saltern). In addition to salterns there is a small river diving in the sea on which some bridges were built to reach the town centre. In Alykes there are many shops of every kind: supermarkets, cake shops, souvenir shops, jewellers and many others amusement. During the day along the beach there are water sports whereas at night, after dinner in one of the many typical taverns with international cuisine or fast food, it is possible to have a drink in one of the many pubs that play every sort of music.

Agios Nikolaos is the second port of Zakinthos connecting it with Pessada, Kefalonia island during the summer. It is set sheltered bay with an islet in front of it. Many speed boats and boat trips to the Blue Caves and Navagio beach run from here all day long and the trip is much sorter compared to boats starting from Zakinthos town. Around the port you will some nice tavernas and a bakery. There is also a small pebbly beach between the two piers.

Beaches

Xigia Beach is located on the eastern coast of the northern part of the island. You can get there only by car, (10’ far away from our villa) but some trips offer a visit to the beach. The beaches in this part of the island are tiny, mostly pebble. So is the sulfuric beach. In the water in this region of the island, sulfur is being mined, so the water contains large amounts of it. When swimming by the beach, You can see the characteristic turbidity in the water - as if there was something that didn't dissolve completely. Of course, the water is clean and pleasant, though rather cold (because of the cliffs and large depth of water - a few meters from the beach can be tens of meters deep. Sulphur baths are healthy for the skin, they make it wonderfully smooth. The only con of the bath - about one day after baths, everyone has the distinct smell of sulfur. Such a local attraction:-) Sulfuric beacheas are basically two - one more wild, away from the road (about a 10-15 minute walk from the road) and the other by the road. Cars mostly stop by the second beach - there is a small tavern on the cliff, but more should be told that this is a bar. The food is good and not too expensive. Because the beach is placed much lower (at the very bottom of the cliff), tavern invented an interesting mechanism for transporting food to the beach - in the form of a "rollercoaster", where the basket is carrying orders from a tavern on the cliff to the reception on the beach - most popular are ice cream ordered directly on the beach.
