Refined-yet-rustic treatment of down-home meats and vegetables. The menu shuffles often, but expect all manner of mushrooms, shaved foie gras, and shellfish, amidst wines selected by pro sommelier Vanya Filipovic. Take note: reservations aren’t accepted.

This immaculately white 20-year-old temple of French gastronomy has a “save it for a special occasion” rep, but the food is more playful than most imagine; items like the beloved corn-lobster soup are decidedly French, but not mired in classicism. All in all, it’s not just for that yearly anniversary dinner.

Antonio Park’s eponymous restaurant may be the best known place to munch on high-end maki in Montreal, but it would be unwise to overlook chef Junichi Ikematsu’s Mile End restaurant. The chef’s honed knife is applied to a veritable rainbow of raw seafood, from Arctic Char to uni and snow crab, across sashimi, maki, and temaki dishes that truly let that fresh fish shine.

Mile End is a hip, laid-back area with an artsy vibe and multicultural roots. Old-school bagel shops, Greek eateries and Italian cafes mix with stylish restaurants and buzzing brunch spots. Indie shops selling records, books and vintage clothes are found throughout the area, especially on Rue Bernard.
