Welcome to my earth bag home located 25 minutes outside of the entrance to Big Bend National Park. The house sits on 70 acres with 360 degree views of mountains, mesas, pinnacles, spires, and buttes. A truly unique way to experience the area.

It is not uncommon to see multiple storms raging at once while the sun is setting, lightning striking, moon beaming, stars shooting, and rainbows arching all in unison. The views stretch to an estimated 40-50 miles wide while boasting an ever changing kaleidoscopic sky that will come back to you in your dreams time and time again.

You will have the entire house to yourselves.
I am a part of an association which allows my guests to access the public pool 13 miles away for $5 per car load. It is clean, in a beautiful setting, and not crowded the times I've been.

I am generally around the Big Bend area for 6 months at a time and am happy to meet with guests and answer questions about the area. I am typically away for the summer but know many people who will keep an eye on my place. I'd be happy to answer questions through email or phone when I'm out of the area. Other than that I will leave details about the functions of the household on note cards throughout the house. It is rather straight forward.

Gracias.

This is a self check in and check out rental. You will be required to bring your own linens, blankets/sleeping bags, towels, fire wood, and drinking water. I have a kettle and French press but you must bring your own coffee and tea There is no flush toilet. This is a compost toilet that you spread peat moss over your business. I will provide peat moss and toilet paper. You will be required to empty and replace compost bucket in the designated area when you check out. It really isn't that bad of a process. Also, I do have an air conditioner but you can only put on between the hours of 11am-5pm at peak sunlight and only if it is not a cloudy day. You can NEVER use the AC at night!! This home runs entirely on solar energy so please do not use household appliances (hair dryers, blenders, irons, etc.). I catch all of my water from rain storms in cisterns so your showers and dishwashing will need to be gone about very methodically to conserve water. I will provide biodegradable soaps and request you to only use soaps of this nature. All of my water runs into an area that will eventually feed a garden. Please don't poison my soil with non-biodegradable soaps. This is a dry desert and water is very precious so please be mindful of your consumption. When you check out I require you to leave the house how it was left for you so other guests can enjoy a neat environment. This may include sweeping floors, washing dishes and putting them away, cleaning counters, table top, stove top, and refrigerator. I also require you to take all of your trash and recycling with you when you leave. If any of these things do not appeal to you I insist that you book a hotel/motel. Please respect my off grid home and be open to a more sustainable alternative to traditional lodging. Thank you.

I have a very intimate relationship with my land and everything surrounding it. I built every bit of this house with my own hands and only want to share it with those who have a keen respect for hard work and the preservation of nature. Please be gentle with my home and the surrounding flora and fauna. No hunting is permitted on my property. Also, no shooting of guns will be accepted on my property. You can NEVER use AC at night!! It is warm here in the desert between June and September so be prepared! If you are arriving late at night you will not be able to use the AC. My home runs entirely on solar energy so please do not use household appliances (hair dryers, curling irons, blenders, clothing irons, etc.). The off the grid house was amazing! Jamie met us upon arriving and showed us all around. He has an incredible talent in making these homes. The solitude was refreshing. The star gazing was the best we have ever seen! We will be back and stay longer. Thank you Jamie for opening your home to us! It was beautiful!

We absolutely loved staying here! The house is a beautiful, rustic, well decorated home not far outside of the park. If you are traveling with dogs, you can rest assured that they will be safe and far from any busy roads while playing outside. The fire pit is a wonderful spot to spend the evening, and we thoroughly enjoyed cooking out on the grill each night. This was my birthday gift for my boyfriend this year, and he said it was his favorite place he's ever visited in Texas. Highly recommend it!

Thank you so much for the amazing opportunity to stay in your home. We loved it more than we can even put into words. All the directions and notes were very helpful! The views were so unbelievable, we were truly speechless. Anyone who is looking for tranquillity and serenity this is absolutely the place to stay. A great place to disconnect!

My boyf and I came out to Jamie's place for his b-day and it was everything (and more) than we could have hoped for. The description and pictures are 100% accurate and we were so happy with the place. While it was HOT during the day (around 95) the evenings cooled off perfectly. A great breeze blows through and the view of the stars is so breath taking. I loved seeing how much water we used (very little) and were able to conserve when having to dump the water to water the plants. The compost toilet was also an eye opening experience but really clean and loved the incense matches that were provided. The outdoor shower was nice and hot and provided amazing views. What an experience. It is important that you keep the sun shades up during the day and open the windows at night to keep the inside cool/manageable. We found the bedroom too warm to sleep in (but keep in mind we were there in a very hot month) so we slept in the living room and it was so much cooler, PERFECT really! Would I come back again? HECK YES, in a heart beat. Jamie is an amazing host and very communicative. PS Be sure you plug in and charge up the vacuum the morning you plan to leave. We didn't realize it was "dead" and couldn't vacuum for the next person and had to try to sweep instead :( You will not regret booking this Air BNB!

Embracing a sustainable way of life was so fun. I took the most amazing shower of my life at sunset, enjoyed outdoor living, encountered wildlife, and watched the epic sunset. The only negative was that the home stayed a little too warm for our liking--but I also understand it's the desert at the end of the summer and using too much energy to cool goes against the intention of the house.
