Simple cabin deep in redwood forest, with screaming fast wi-fi. Clean with rudimentary facilities (no bathroom – just an outhouse adjacent). Hot water at sink for sponge bath, plus hot outdoor shower, totally exposed to forest and sky, as a backup.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

Charming 250 sf wood cabin, with queen mattress in sleeping loft. Cabin is surrounded by several paths through forest acreage, alive in winter rains with matsutake, black morels, king boletes and chanterelle mushrooms. Cabin is 75 feet downhill from its own private driveway. The property is located near the end of a mountainous dirt road, on a coastal ridge, 3 hours north of San Francisco.

CHAPTER 2: I got up early and bathed in the pond; that was a religious exercise, and one of the best things which I did. – Thoreau

Evoke your own narrative experience of Thoreau's 2 years spent in a cabin near Concord Mass. You may not be jumping into the cold Pacific Ocean, for example, but you're only spending 5 nights! You can practice the art of the mini sponge bath at the kitchen sink. There is excellent hot running water in the cabin. PLUS you will gain the practical knowledge of another charming throwback to Thoreau's era –an adjacent outhouse. Although there is no 21st century bathroom/toilet at the cabin, private outhouse has had minimal use over the years. Path to and from privy is floodlit. Cabin is electricity (surge protected) and features small cooking stovetop and propane heat. Architect designed steel counter tops and wood cabinets. Some creature comforts (down blanket and Corbusier chaise), along with writing table, chair, ink pen, manual typewriter, ream of paper and small lit library.

The geographical area features many hillside and coastal hiking trails, an historic lighthouse, restored movie theater, French bakery, library, and fine dining. Wine tasting tour, 1 hour by car, in the Anderson Valley (still free).

The cabin is available for stays of 3-5 nights and will be undergoing a few simple upgrades in late 2014/2015. Come visit while Thoreau's cabin remains in its simplest incarnation, bargain pricing.

Just as described, a delightful hideaway in the woods worthy of Thoreau! We loved the utter quiet and as others have mentioned, the outside showering is lovely. The cabin is small but has everything we needed, comforts of home with the peace of the woods. Never having used an outhouse before, I found it pleasant to gaze into the woods. Sleeping in the loft was sweet, we could see stars at night and woke to light filtering through the trees. Randall has great tips for nearby food (Franny's is a must) and sights (Stornetta hike was breathtaking).

The best vacation ever!! Don’t think just book, you’ll be happy that you did. The bed is comfy and warm, the shower is hot and outside, the WiFi is fast and reliable, and there is a fridge and burner stove.

We only stayed the one night and it was an experience. Location is remote as described. Try to arrive in the daylight as could be tricky otherwise. Good place to get away from it all.

What a gem! I was blown away when I first arrived and could hardly contain my giddiness. The hosts were warm and helpful, the space is that of a writer's or artist's dreams. I will definitely be back again!

This cabin is really amazing we felt like we where up in the tree and far from everything. Perfect get away if you want to relax. But there is also great hikes to do around. Although Randall was not there at our arrival, we felt very welcome and he gave us a lot of great tips about what to do around. We really liked the shower! Great experience! I definitely recommend this place and can't wait to go back!

Randall and Carolyn provided a fantastic written guide to the area and went above and beyond to be generous and accommodating when I had some changes to my plan. I cannot praise their kindness highly enough. The place is just as described. Highlights are the excellent library and the outdoor shower. I'll be going back as soon as I can!

Los Angeles native transplanted to New York City for grad school and several years teaching at a private, 4 year, women's college in Boston. Now residing in the tiny city of Point Arena on the Mendocino coast, I'm a writer finishing work on my first "non-fiction novel." I also teach at California Institute of Integral Studies where I founded and edit an inter-arts magazine, "Mission at Tenth." My wife and I have 2 kids and we use our SF penthouse as a pied a terre when we work in the city. In between, semesters, the flat is available for 90 day rentals. We've also worked to develop and refine our "Jewel Box House" in the redwood forest of the Mendocino coast, and we're happy now to add that to airbnb's listings. Add to that our small "Thoreau Cabin," in its own private acre of woods on our mountainside. Carolyn and I like to provide detailed info and local color, along with recommendations to our guests.
